Spider-Gwen #1 is yet another chance for you to jump on board the character's ongoing adventures. As a "first" issue, it does a good job of recapping everything from the previous volume while setting up a whole new tale. The relaunch may be a bit of a blessing in disguise as the last ongoing stumbled to find an identity early on after the phenomenal first appearance of Spider-Gwen in Spider-Verse. Now though, Latour seems to have a strong handle of the impressive supporting cast, and a new mystery that strikes at the heart of Gwen Stacy. Robbi Rodriguez's stylized, and exaggerated art continues to be the best part of the book, especially as paired with Rico Renzi's electric colors. –Levi

Spider-Gwen #1 (Published by Marvel Comics; Review by Richard Gray; 'Rama Rating: 6 out of 10):

It's Spider-Gwen's second #1 for the year, and despite the end of the universe in between, Jason Latour neatly segues us back into a familiar pattern. Perhaps a little too familiar, with Gwen's Lizard-related investigation taking us back over older territory and wounds already revealed. The concept of Spider-Gwen was a stroke of genius during Spider-Verse, but here it's already on the repeat cycle with the concept barely out of trainers. Despite this, Robbie Rodriguez's art is nothing short of magical, his punk-rock cartoons enhanced by color artist Rico Renzi's pastel cartoon shades, who on occasion pulls the coloring back to a two-toned retro look reminiscent of Daniel Clowes. The shock revelation of another gender-swapped hero will come as not surprise to readers of the Battleworld tie-ins, but at least it promises to launch this second volume of Spider-Gwen in a new direction.

Wow, this post-Secret Wars relaunch was just the thing that Spider-Gwen needed. While the last volume felt a bit wandering and lost at times, the creators have used this opportunity to tighten their story. Spider-Gwen is on the hunt for the truth about Peter Parker's Lizard transformation and it leads her to a showdown with Captain America (aka Samantha Wilson) and a squad of Lizards. Captain America's appearance here is especially well handled. In the past Jason Latour has used characters like Matt Murdock and Frank Castle more for their name value than anything, but Captain America here is already a fully formed character who feels organic to the world. Between all that, great character drama, and Robbi Rodriguez's usual outstanding character design this is proving to be a hugely successful relaunch. -Levi

Just as Spider-Gwen finds herself overwhelmed by a legion of lizards, Captain America enters the fray in Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez's Spider-Gwen #2, another quick-witted and action-packed issue of Marvel's standout series. Latour wastes no time here, introducing Samantha Wilson: Captain America with a double-page origin spread that is equal parts familiar and fresh. Artist Robbi Rodriguez contributes 22 pages of angular and animated artwork here, with fluid action that smoothly slides from panel to panel in a flurry of fists and fury. Colorist Rico Renzi complements Rodriguez's pencils by turning his characters into pink, green and white bolts of lightning atop a night-time world of black and blue. Elsewhere, there's ample drama as George Stacy's quest to find Peter Parker's killer hits the rocks. Spider-Gwen has always been a quality title, and this issue is no exception.

Superheroes have to have limitations. The fact that Gwen Stacy has a multi-dimensional teleporter that she can use at any time to get anywhere is probably something that should have been limited. In this issue, Gwen uses that device to travel to the main Marvel Universe so she can get the pregnant Jessica Drew Spider-Woman to help her out of some handcuffs. Possible suspension of belief-breaking technology aside, this issue also struggles in a couple of other respects. It just feels too early and unearned for Gwen to be back to the 616 Universe, give the character some time to establish her own world. Her mentor relationship with Jessica is also unearned to this point and makes most of their conversation powerless. This is a disappointing and oddly timed issue. –Levi

This month, Spider-Gwen slows way down. Contrasting the stark differences between the two worlds that Gwen now calls home, Spider-Gwen #3 trades in its action beats for emotional ones to great effect. Writer Jason Latour finds a wealth of charm in the interactions between Gwen and her mentor Jessica Drew on Earth-616, and tempers it by raising some major stakes back on Earth-GS. While the script is a bit more exposition-heavy this month, artists Robbi Rodriguez and Rico Renzi still find pockets of action in the flashbacks detailing Gwen fateful encounter with her universe's Lizard, Peter Parker. Even the best punk outfits couldn't go hard all the time, and Spider-Gwen #3 shows that this series can still deliver even when working within a slower tempo.
