Considering that All-New Hawkeye is pretty much a direct continuation of his first crack at the character, its impressive just how new Jeff Lemire's latest run feels. Much of that newness comes from Lemire's increased focus on the Clint/Kate relationship, or, at this point in the game, the lack of one. The writer continues to fill in the bridge between past and present, dropping all manner of affecting insights that only enhance his already strong characterization. The adversity of the read falls a bit shorter, with The Mandarin as of yet serving as little more than a plot device, but overall the two divergent plotlines remain engaging. Equally so is the art by Ramon Perez, who, with colorist Ian Herron, continues to offer two uniquely beautiful art styles. Both are Spartan in their creation, but the differing use of heavy matte versus vibrant neon again proves distinct. His ability to convey that non-spoken proves particularly strong this time around, his sloop shouldered Clint awe-buddy-huggable in his plight. -Jeff

All-New Hawkeye #2 (Published by Marvel Comics; Review by Richard Gray; 'Rama Rating: 9 out of 10):

Jeff Lemire has his cake and eats it too, with a dual narrative that allows the future Old Man Hawkeye and Kate Bishop to have Avengers style adventures against the Mandarin, while the modern day story is a thematic continuation of the excellent street-level everyman character Matt Fraction crafted over the course of the last few years. The strength of this arc is not only in tying back into previous stories, but in also clearly defining what differing characteristics the two Hawkeyes possess and what what makes them stronger together and apart. The other strength, of course, is the Ramon Perez artwork, flipping between the delicate futuristic hues of Ian Herring's colors and the grim and gritty look of the present day. It's a rare thing to see the consequences of the heroes' actions played out in such an innovative way, and it's almost impossible to say which time period is more fascinating.

The present-day Hawkeye material is great in this issue, so why do we have to keep jumping the narrative through time? Why?!? The flashbacks were some of the least compelling parts of the last volume of this series, and the flash-forwards now are proving to be even worse - both because you know they are essentially meaningless and will be wiped away in no time, and because Ramon Perez's style in those jumps lacks the wow-factor of his usual art. The problem amplifies because it's taking away pages from the present day storyline, where Jeff Lemire and Ramon Perez are doing fun and relatable character work. One part of this is terrific, the other significantly less so. –Levi
