Robbie Thompson and Stacey Lee barely had time to establish Silk as a solo heroine before Marvel's relaunch necessitated a new series and a new status quo. However unnecessary this fresh start might be, at least the creators make the most of it. Silk's hunt for the mysterious new Goblin King gives the book ample dramatic weight, though it's really the more lighthearted qualities that help it thrive. It's fun to see all the ways Thompson draws parallels between Cindy's life and the early years of Peter Parker while also shaking up the formula quite a bit. Nowhere is this more apparent than the relationship between Cindy and her boss, J. Jonah Jameson. This first issue also keeps readers on their toes with a series of twists and swerves as Silk seems to work on both sides of the law. Through it all, Lee's art is a huge asset to the book. It's colorful, dynamic and stylish without being too cartoonish. Even the little qualities stand out, like the way Lee is able to make Silk such an expressive character even when half her ace is covered by a mask. -Jesse

Earlier this year, Silk was the best Marvel title that you weren't reading. In its second volume, the stakes have been raised as Silk is working undercover for Black Cat to take down the Goblin King, it's all quite exciting and fun. Unfortunately, this second issue doesn't do as much with that new status quo as the first issue did and spins its wheels a bit too much. Worst of all, the slow moving plot requires Silk's inner-dialogue to carry too much of the load of this issue. The funny and quirky thoughts that generally run through her head become almost grating from overuse. The book also really misses artist Stacey Lee, who is so key in this series's success. Tana Ford's exaggerated figures are evocative of a traditional artist in the Spider-Verse, but they can also tend to be too exaggerated at times. Silk is a great series, but this issue is kind of a bummer. –Levi

Silk has struggled slightly to make good on its promise of having the main character undercover in Black Cat's crew, but Robbie Thompson uses this issue to address some of the concerns with Silk's plan in the form of a conversation with Peter Parker. It might seem a bit too early in the relaunch for a big guest appearance like this, but it actually really helps give context to Silk's plan and push forward that narrative. The actual undercover part takes and interesting fun turn and she has to team-up with Shrike to investigate the Goblin Nation members. It's still baffling that they would start this relaunch with Stacey Lee on art for Silk #1 and then immediately transition to a new artist, but Tana Ford is an able replacement, if not quite the same caliber of cartoonist as Lee. Overall, Silk seems to be heading in a good direction –Levi
