Whereas last issue maintained a natural feel despite its tie-in structure, this installment reads very much as a cut and paste Civil War II title. Dennis Hopeless again positions Jessica as woman in the middle of it all, detailing the character's unique relationships with the various parties involved. He does a solid job of exploring the conflict of the character, allowing her to work through a range of emotions as she tries to make sense of it all. Less effective is his use of Carol Danvers. Her dismissive attitude towards Jess comes off as more of a narrative device than a real emotional response, which ultimately neuters the inevitable fallout between the two. Veronica Fish is mostly able to mask those square-peg-round-hole maneuverings with her great panel composition and fluid sense of movement, but for all of the emotional fallout presented here, this issue is lacking in punch. -Jeff

Amidst the many things happening in the current Civil War II conflict between superheroes, one is deeply personal to Jessica Drew: her ex-boyfriend, Clint Barton, just killed her good friend, Bruce Banner. Even more complicated is that Jess's best friend, Carol Danvers, instigated the messy chain of events that led to Bruce's death. When Jess confronts Carol, we see Jess's anger and frustration captured perfectly by artists Veronica Fish and Rachelle Rosenberg. Fish contrasts Jess's aggressive body stances — crouched and ready to punch — with Carol's stoic, almost flippant demeanor. Rosenberg introduces a new grey and black color scheme for Jess's undercover costume, which stands out against beautiful backdrops of purple ambient lighting and green energy blasts. Through excellent fight choreography and biting dialogue, Spider-Woman #11 illustrates how Carol's lack of empathy can destroy even the closest of friendships. Under Dennis Hopeless's pen, Jessica Drew is one of the most realistic and riveting protagonists in the Marvel Universe.

Have you ever been spending time with a friend but then their coworker shows up and spoils the night? Spider-Woman #13 is the comic book equivalent of that, and with Civil War II tie-in season in the past, Dennis Hopeless takes all of one page to reaffirm that this run of Spider-Woman is the strongest in the character's history. Whether Jessica Drew is in costume or going civilian, the commitment and skill that Hopeless displays with characterization is palpable. The comic takes a sharp turn from comedy during the confrontation between Hobgoblin and Roger Gocking in a genuinely shocking and game-changing sequence. Veronica Fish's art is striking and effective throughout the issue, with a particular strength in facial expression and body language. The story that she tells throughout the aforementioned confrontation is heartbreaking with how potent physical and emotional pain are conveyed. The comic has an extremely bold ending which other stories should note. It doesn't end on a plot cliffhanger, but rather an on emotional one. Hopeless' last lines in the issue cement this an exemplary beginning to an arc.

Talk about an explosive start to an arc. Of the many trials Jessica Drew has faced thus far in Dennis Hopeless' run, few, if any, shake the book on the level that issue #13 does. Hopeless has done a superb job of late in cultivating a believable balance between costumed crime fighter and first time mother, and a big part of that balance comes from Drew's expertly utilized supporting cast. There's a real believability to their relationship that transcends any costumed antics, and it's that personal feel that ultimately allows Hopeless to successfully deliver the gut punch he does here. Artist Veronica Fish and colorist Rachelle Rosenberg likewise shoot for the feels, the issue's bright colors and energetic layouts deceptively inviting in setting up the sudden swerve. Issue #13 is the perfect example of a character-first approach paying dividends, and serves to cement Spider-Woman as one of the more emotionally involving Marvel books on the rack. -Jeff
