You can take the woman out of the hero, but you can't take the hero out of the woman. Okay, that's not really a saying, but it does speak to the delicate balancing act Dennis Hopeless and Javier Rodriguez continue to pull off. By putting Jessica in a position in which she legitimately has no little to no choice over her own actions, writer Hopeless is able to explore a number of conflicting emotions in investing ways. He does so by not shying away from the difficulty (and often absurdity) of the book's events, leaning Jessica further into harm's way even as she desperately tries to keep herself, and more importantly, her child, out of it. The script itself is humorous as ever, with lighting fast banter and plenty of amusing inner gripes, but it's the human, not superhuman, element that again stands out. That, and the ever creative paneling of artist Rodriguez, who again delivers some wonderfully unique and eye spinning spreads. -Jeff

If readers still have doubts about the idea of morphing Jessica Drew into a single mother, perhaps this issue will finally put them to rest. Dennis Hopeless and Javier Rodriguez bring the current story arc to a fantastic climax full of high personal stakes for Jess. Between the gang of vengeful Skrulls and the imminent, unplanned arrival of her baby, Jess finds herself in quite a pickle. And that's where she really shines. Hopeless offers a powerful look at Jess' maternal side and the superhuman lengths she'll go to to protect the most important thing in the world to her. The final showdown is a thrill to read, but even that's eclipsed by the comparatively quiet but no less emotional aftermath as Captain Marvel enters the picture again. The characters are what define this book. That and Javier Rodriguez's stunning art, which boasts plenty of jaw-dropping page design and powerful displays of emotion this month. -Jesse

This series has only gotten better thanks to the recent relaunch and the advent of Jessica Drew's new status quo as a pregnant, semi-retired hero. Now with her baby on board, Jessica's struggle in this standalone issue is to figure out how to handle this incredible new responsibility in her life and decide how, or even if, she's going to return to her old life. This might just be the best effort yet from Dennis Hopeless and Javier Rodriguez. There's a very genuine quality to the writing as Jess deals with the whirlwind of emotions a new baby brings. This issue is frequently hilarious (particularly once the full context behind her opening monologue is revealed), but also very heartfelt and touching. For his part, Rodriguez absolutely kills it this month. His elegant figure work and snazzy design sense result in a comic that's incredibly dynamic and eye-catching regardless of whether the focus is on action, comedy or simple dialogue. -Jesse

If there's any comic I wish I could trumpet to the masses this week, it has to be Spider-Woman #5, a powerful, wonderful, important look at Marvel's premiere superhero mom. Dennis Hopeless has said that this run on Spider-Woman was inspired by his wife's pregnancy, and watching Jessica silently freak out over how much her world has been rocked by her newborn is funny, endearing and ultimately enthralling. Jess misses free time, her independence, even her superheroic career - but Hopeless captures her path from being a skittish new mother to her return to the costumed life with sensitivity and nuance. Javier Fernandez adds a world of emotion in Jess's eyes, really utilizing every opportunity for physical comedy, like Jess opening diapers with her teeth or silently imagining all the ways the babysitter could kill her child. If you pick up one book from the Big Two this week, make sure it's this one.
