By now you've surely seen the news about this issue's big twist, and beginning the series with that event is certainly a strong statement to make out of the gate about the team's brutal mission statement. Ultimately, it's probably the best way that they could have gone about introducing their team with a bang, but it also doesn't give us enough time with any of these characters to understand them on any level. If this is your first encounter with these characters, you probably won't even remember their names by issue's end. Another problem with this issue is how it uses Leonard Kirk. Kirk proved recently, in Fantastic Four, that he's one of Marvel's best at chaotic, massive fight scenes - but his talents are muted the smaller the scenes get and this issue is riddled with 8-plus panel pages diminishing Kirk's impact greatly. This is an issue with a great sense of purpose, but one that doesn't fully sell the ongoing nature of the book. –Levi

Squadron Supreme #1 (Published by Marvel Comics; Review by Justin Partridge; 'Rama Rating: 2 out of 10):

One of my biggest complaints with the WWE is sometimes the wrestlers that are set up as the good guys do horrible, villainous things in order to achieve their goals. Squadron Supreme #1 is the comic book version of exactly that. Writer James Robinson drops us in the middle of the new Squadron's crusade against Namor the Sub-Mariner, and even though Robinson has his characters bend over backwards to justify their actions, the entire action of the comic comes across as if the heroes are the villains and Namor is only fighting to protect himself and his people. Artist Leonard Kirk, along with colorist Frank Martin and inker Paul Neary, doesn't come across much better either, as most of the action scenes are overstuffed and too busy, while the establishing and reaction shots look rushed and ill-defined. The Squadron Supreme may have been heroes on their own respective worlds but here in this debut, they look and act more like the villains.

The first issue of this new series certainly made a statement with the death of a major Marvel character, but it wasn't clear whether it was a good statement. Nor was it clear whether this book would have anything to add when it comes to deconstructing the Justice League archetype. But structurally, this book seems to have the right idea in mind. Where the first issue was a big, flashy affair, this second chapter offers a more introspective look at each Squadron member and how they're dealing with their new home world. The execution is sound, with Hyperion feeling much more in line with how the character was portrayed in Jonathan Hickman's Avengers than he was in issue #1. Leonard Kirk's art, meanwhile, is gorgeous and expressive regardless of location or subject matter. It's great to see the Robinson/Kirk partnership carry over from Fantastic Four. Honestly, the worst thing about this comic may be the fact that it takes place within the Marvel Universe and not in its own corner. The attempts to integrate the Avengers into this story feel forced, and the fact that this issue's cliffhanger is almost identical to the last doesn't help. -Jesse
