It's a shame that Age of Apocalypse is quickly approaching its end, Fabian Nicieza and Gerardo Sandoval know these characters and this world so well that it would be fascinating to see what they could do with it on an ongoing basis. The story for this issue centers on the two groups of mutants getting closer to finding out about the Legacy Virus, but it's not the story that's impressive, it's the world and character work. The motivations and interpretations of every character is compelling. This may be a "setting the table" kind of issue, but the cliffhanger promises that this impressive series will go out with a bang. -Levi

This incarnation of Age of Apocalypse has impressed with strong characterization, an interesting and fast-paced plot, and art that was both perfectly reflective of the original event's and at home in modern times. The art may have been the best of those three impressive pillars, which is why it's disappointing that we see a new artist come on with #4. Iban Coello takes over for Gerardo Sandoval here, and though it's complementary to Sandoval's style (colorist David Curiel does a great job helping to keep that consistency) it still lacks some of the majesty and theatricality of Sandoval's storytelling. The plot reaches its climax here and despite the slight disappointment on art, the story is strong enough to make it through as another satisfying issue. -Levi

Una bella conclusione per una bella mini! Finale leggermente inaspettato, ma che ci sta tutto, peccato per certe scelte di Nicienza

Age of Apocalypse #5 is a disappointingly bad conclusion to what started out as a great miniseries. This final issue falls apart in numerous ways. The first and most obvious failing of the book is in the artist change. Iban Coello took over for Gerardo Sandoval last issue, and while Coello is a fine artist, he just doesn't have that same special modern-yet-'90s flare of Sandoval's work. The letdowns don't just end there though. We praised the writing of the first few issues for smart structuring and dynamic, nuanced characterization. That all goes out the window in this final chapter. Characters behave in strange and contradictory ways, the conclusion is reached too quick and doesn't fully make sense, and the point-of-view character of the series (Doug Ramsey) is completely forgotten about except when he's over explaining plot details via narration. The greatness of the previous issues almost make this letdown worse. –Levi
