Welcome to Arcadia. Amidst the fragmented hodgepodge of universes that comprises Battleworld, Marguerite Bennett, G. Willow Wilson and Jorge Molina bring us a new hero team composed of Marvel's strongest ladies. Although things initially seem perfect in the sunny land of Arcadia, the harsh nature of Doctor Doom's grip on Battleworld soon threatens the A-Force's ability to protect their citizens and each other... Teamwork and obedience are the two key-words that run through Bennett and Wilson's script, which competently juggles two distinct tones of seriousness. A light threat, easily dispatched by A-Force, soon gives way to darker forces, but Bennett and Wilson control this tonal downslide with fleshed-out characterization and solid relationship dynamics. When Jorge Molina takes center-stage, such as when a spiked shark explodes from Arcadia's crystal waters, he excels. Molina's panels are well-composed, but his faces seem a little inconsistent at times. A solid cliffhanger rounds out the intriguing A-Force #1, which is another imaginative and original concept for Marvel's Secret Wars event.

The first issue of A-Force provided a fine mix of boisterous action and engaging character work, all of which effectively tied into the larger Battleworld picture. Issue #2 offers much of the same, C. Willow Wilson and Marguerite Bennett both focusing the direction of the main narrative as they expand their characters place within it. The writers toss in magic portals and robot showdowns aplenty, but the real fun comes with their introduction of a mysterious new character. This unnamed entrant is interesting enough on her own, but becomes more so as we see how each A-Force member reacts around her. This new layer adds a welcome intrigue to Battleworld as a whole, as the team sets to unravel a mystery outside of their normal universe. Jorge Molina has a great time with the aforementioned newbie, his take silent but mischievous. His gift for nuanced expression again carries the book through its more emotional confrontations, not to mention he draws a pretty sweet battle sequence. -Jeff

A-Force is a title that would be on the top of the heap were it not for its Secret Wars origins. Just as Spider-Woman began to soar when it was divorced of the Spider-Verse tie-in, Marguerite Bennett and G. Willow Wilson's showcase for Marvel's strong top-tier female leads is precisely the team that the world needs right now - it's just hampered a bit by the fact we know their status quo on Battleworld is to be short-lived. With the introduction of a new heroine and a new threat, the issue skillfully plays to the strengths of the ensemble, from She-Hulk's natural leadership, Medusa's ruthless decision making and former Runaway Nico Minoru's compassion. Jorge Molina is adept at striking poses with Marvel's A-list here, along with some stunning splashes of multiversal rifts and full-page Sentinels. It will be great to see this team strike out on their own post-Secret Wars.
