It's a short week here at The Source, what with our last summer Friday looming. Then it's back to the drain of five-day work weeks. Frightening, huh?

But we've got a ton of stuff lined up to show off in the next few days, so no worries. And we know how much you like teaser art. What's better than that? Well, teaser art and news, no?

You've heard rumblings about this here and there, but we can now officially confirm that starting in November, THE GREAT TEN will star in their own 10-part mini-series, from writer Tony Bedard and artist Scott McDaniel, with covers by Stanley "Artgerm" Lau.

At the dawn of the Chinese Century, the 10 official "super-functionaries" of the People's Republic face their greatest challenge as the gods of Ancient China return to destroy communist rule. Will the most populous nation on Earth drag the rest of the world down with it? Do its heroes even want to save a government that treats them like pawns?

Want more? We got Bedard to give us the basics on the new series. Take it away, Tony:

"When I went off to college, I really got into Eastern philosophy — Taoism, Buddhism, Zen, etc. Around the same time, I picked up ANIMAL MAN and I've been a hardcore Grant Morrison fan ever since. So I leapt at the chance to do a GREAT TEN series, to flesh out these characters Grant dreamed up and tap the amazing storytelling potential in both them and their country. It's a chance to do a different take on super-heroes, and just like my R.E.B.E.L.S. series, I think THE GREAT TEN is going to take a lot of people by surprise."

THE GREAT TEN #1 hits 11/4. And, wait, here's some dandy preview art, including the cover to #1.

DC's GREAT TEN: Meet the Chinese Super-Team, parts 1 & 2

In November, comic readers will be re-introduced to the Great Ten, DC's team of superheroes from China, with a 10-issue mini-series by writer Tony Bedard.

Introduced to readers during the weekly series 52, the Great Ten was the brainchild of Grant Morrison.

"After the first 52 story meeting, I went home, dug out the reference material on Chinese history and culture I'd used to help create the back-story for the 'Xorn' character in New X-Men and hammered out a huge document complete with detailed origin stories and backgrounds for every member of the Great Ten, as well as some details of the Chinese government's 'super-functionary' program," Morrison told Newsarama when 52 finished.

Headquartered in a complex buried within China's Great Wall, the 10 super-powered characters have names that are a little different because they're literally translated from Chinese. And instead of being called "superheroes," they referred to as "super-functionaries" because their communist government prefers a humble moniker. But the team, because they are official tools of the government, are hindered by bureaucracy and often question the actions they are asked to take by their superiors, who have to approve everything the team does.

"They appeared in 52 and in Checkmate, but they still need to be fleshed out," Bedard told Newsarama when his series was announced.

Now Bedard will be working with artist Scott McDaniel to tell the 10-issue story of how the official "super-functionaries" of the People's Republic of China make difficult choices in the face of ancient enemies. Featuring a battle with the Old Gods of China, the mini-series promises to "redraw the map of the DC."

To help readers make sense of who's who in the Great Ten and what all those names mean, Newsarama will be doing a series of re-introductions to the 10 characters that make up the Great Ten, talking to Bedard to find out more about his upcoming mini-series.

This week, we take a look at Accomplished Perfect Physician and Celestial Archer.

Real Name: Yao Fei.

Power: The ability to use the sound of his voice to heal or harm, as well as manipulate matter.

"The Accomplished Perfect Physician has sonic powers," Bedard said. "He whistles, hums, growls or clicks his tongue and he can heal a cancer, stop an earthquake, etc. It's a very interesting, open-ended power, but it's hard to visually convey in a medium without sound. But Scott McDaniel is actually finding cool ways to show his power at work. I'm very lucky to be working with him."

What Makes the Character Unique: "What stands out to me about Accomplished Perfect Physician is his tragic origin," Bedard said. "He was a soldier assigned to quell an uprising in Tibet. When he happens to kill the man who was to become the latest incarnation of the "accomplished perfect physician" this callow young soldier must take his place. So he is a normal guy with feet of clay who must now use this great power, and he has a cynical edge and rebellious nature because he knows what it is to be used as a pawn. He makes a great counterpoint to the Great Ten leader, the August General in Iron."

His Personality: "I'd say the Accomplished Perfect Physician is the team's detective," Bedard said. "His diagnostic mind and hard-won insight keep him looking for the truth, which makes his government masters nervous. In fact, he was a fugitive for years, before the formed the Great Ten and invited him to join. So even though he now works for 'the Man,' he still feels like an outsider.

What Part The Character Plays in the Great Ten mini-series: "Accomplished Perfect Physician is one of the main characters throughout our series, even though each issue focuses on a different character," Bedard said. "In fact, the tension between the Physician and the General is one of the main things driving the team. The Physician is the first to sense the mystery behind the return of the Chinese gods and he's on the trail to uncover the truth in every issue thereafter, no matter how much trouble it might cause."

Real Name: Unknown.

Power: The ability to fire arrows that are charged with an unknown energy.

"Celestial Archer can do incredibly over-the-top things with his magic bow, like shooting the sun out, or hitting a target on the other side of the world," Bedard said.

What Makes the Character Unique: "Celestial Archer is the Great Ten's strongest connection to the world of classical Chinese mythology," Bedard said. "As a boy, he lives at the foot of China's most sacred mountain, selling souvenirs to tourists. But he soaks up the lore of the place and when he discovers the fabled bow of Yi, the Excellent Archer of the gods, he becomes this great hero, charged with reminding the Chinese of their classical values and culture. But this duty becomes a burden when the gods invade China in our first issue, forcing the Celestial Archer to choose sides."

His Personality: "Celestial Archer is really a simple rural kid at heart," the writer said, "and he sees his mission and his godly mentors as wondrous. He especially pines for the moon goddess, who is his patron."

What Part The Character Plays in the Great Ten mini-series: "The Celestial Archer is torn between his loyalties to his teammates and is loyalty to the gods," Bedard said. "The events of this miniseries seriously put him through some changes and seriously test his faith in both the gods and his country."

This week, comic readers will be re-introduced to the Great Ten, DC's Chinese superteam, with a 10-issue mini-series by writer Tony Bedard.

The Great Ten characters first appeared during the weekly series 52. The brainchild of Grant Morrison, the 10 superpowered characters have names that are a little different because they're literally translated from Chinese. And instead of being called "superheroes," they are referred to as "super-functionaries," since their communist government prefers a more humble moniker.

The new, 10-issue mini-series by Bedard and artist Scott McDaniel will tell the story of how the official "super-functionaries" of the People's Republic of China make difficult choices in the face of ancient enemies. Featuring a battle with the old gods of China, the mini-series promises to "redraw the map of the DCU."

To help readers make sense of who's who in the Great Ten and what all those names mean, Newsarama is doing a series of re-introductions to the 10 characters who make up the team, talking to Bedard to find out more about his upcoming mini-series.

This week, we focus on August General in Iron and Ghost Fox Killer.

August General in Iron
August General in Iron

Real Name: Fan Zhifu.

Power: August General in Iron has been reshaped by Durlan bio-technology, giving him a biometal hide. He carries a special energy staff.

What Makes the Character Unique: "August General in Iron is China's 'Captain America' figure – the super-soldier who personally embodies the strength, resilience and pride of his country," Bedard explained. "In fact, he started out as a Captain named Fang Zhifu in the People's Liberation Army. He was in the special unit sent to check out a crashed alien spaceship in a remote section of the country. The ensuing 'war of the worlds' costs Fang his entire squad and his own humanity as an alien infection morphs his skin into a suit of living armor. But the alien technology captured by Captain Fang forms the basis for China's super-soldier program and the next generation of civil defense in the metahuman arms race. August General in Iron is dutiful and noble, but he's also a tragic figure, a man trapped and cut off from human warmth and intimacy by his own power. Ironically, his armor is what allows him to form a relationship with Ghost Fox Killer, whose touch means instant death for any ordinary man."

His Personality: "August General in Iron is the field commander of the Great Ten and he is deadly serious about carrying out his duty," said Bedard. "He wants the Great Ten to function with military precision, and he has little patience for teammates like Accomplished Perfect Physician who flaunt rules and put their individuality over the group's needs. He's a symbol of the self-sacrifice and desire for order that is a major theme in Chinese culture. But there's a flesh-and-blood man within his rusty iron exterior, a good and decent man trying to make sense of a national crisis and do the right thing."

What Part the Character Plays in the Great Ten mini-series: "The General is central to our saga," Bedard said. "He and the Accomplished Perfect Physician are the complimentary opposites, the Yin and Yang of the Great Ten. The tension between those two drives the Ten's efforts to combat the gods of ancient China and uncover the hidden truth behind their return."

Added info from Tony Bedard: "The August General has one of my favorite visual designs in the Great Ten. He's like a living statue or one of those terra-cotta soldiers from the tomb of the first Emperor come to life. He has a palpable dignity, despite the fact that his exterior is all pitted and rusty. Or maybe it's because he has that texture that he seems like a living monument."

Ghost Fox Killer 1.1
Ghost Fox Killer

Real Name: Unknown, although she is referred to as a Hu Li Jing, the fox-spirits of Chinese mythology.

Power: Ghost Fox Killer's touch causes instant death. She is from a city that is powered by the souls of evil men, and can control the ghosts of men she's killed.

What Makes the Character Unique: "Ghost Fox Killer comes across like one of those 1930s pulp heroes like the Shadow, Green Hornet or Doc Savage," Bedard said. "She has a dark, mysterious appeal, a femme fatale nature that further evokes that film noir era. She haunts an old art deco building in Hong Kong and she preys upon evil men across the city. She hails from an otherworldly land of Ghost Fox Women that is fading away from reality and she must spill the blood of evil men and capture their souls in order to keep her incredible world from vanishing altogether. Thanks to her efforts over the years, Hong Kong is the world's most haunted city, watched over by an army of phantom criminals who now answer only to Ghost Fox Killer."

Her Personality: "Not quite human, Ghost Fox Killer is one of the most dangerous, least predictable members of the Great Ten," Bedard explained. "She has her own agenda beyond her missions with the Ten, and she kills without hesitation, but her relationship with the August General in Iron keeps her interests aligned with those of the Ten. Ghost Fox is cocky and sardonic, and you get the impression that she looks down on everybody she meets, a mocking tone in her voice no matter what she says. But she's also stunningly beautiful and charismatic, so men are drawn to her like moths to the flame."

What Part the Character Plays in the Great Ten mini-series: Ghost Fox will take on Chu Jiang, the God of Death, on the streets of Hong Kong. In fact, Issues #6 and 7 are a two-part clash in Kong Kong that changes the whole direction of the mini-series. She also doesn't care much for Accomplished Perfect Physician, and there's always tension when those two meet."

Added info from Tony Bedard: "Ghost Fox has tons of weird, ghostly technology and weapons. She even has a car with a spectral chauffer!"

Check back with Newsarama for the next two installments of our Great Ten series as we look at Seven Deadly Brothers, Shaolin Robot, Mother of Champions and Red Socialist Guardsman
