Loki and Thor team up and much more in the latest issue of THE MIGHTY THOR.
The Good
What a perfect way to celebrate 50 years of the "God of Thunder" than to bring artist Alan Davis on board to illustrate THE MIGHTY THOR #18! I don't know what it is about Davis on this book, but something about his style reminds me so much of Jack Kirby's art from back in the day. Whether it be the way he illustrates expressions or Thor himself, so much of Kirby resonates in this issue, which I absolutely loved.

The dynamic between a young Loki and his trickster spirit that has been reincarnated into a Magpie is fantastic. I think it's really well written and poetic, and it's unlike anything being written by Fraction right now. I think in total, though, you can definitely tell that this issue was written in part by Kieron Gillen; it just feels like a lot of what we saw in his THOR run last year. It's really well done though and I love the fact that this issue is crossing over into JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY. The interaction between the characters, the dialogue and the three layers of ongoing stories in this book is fantastic. I love that there is so much going on in this issue but that it's still relatively easy to follow.

I really like this story though, and although I think it might be easier to understand if you've been reading the series, I still think it's a pretty good introductory issue into two series (THE MIGHTY THOR and JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY) for a new reader.

The Bad
Nothing bad here. I really loved this book.

The Verdict
Fantastic art paired with wonderful characters and a multi layered story is what you'll find in this week's issue of THE MIGHTY THOR. The relationship between Loki and Thor spills across the pages and is really well written, as is the mystery surrounding this burning building in Midgard. I love that the All-Mother Freyja opens some doors in Loki's mind about his identity and his Father, and I look forward to seeing how that story develops. This is a really great issue and a good place to start if you're looking into begin reading THE MIGHTY THOR.

The cover to "Mighty Thor" #18 promises readers a prologue to "Everything Burns." The story offers some panel time to Surtur -- after all, if there's fire and Asgard combined, Surtur is certain to be near. It also sets into motion the six-part crossover with "Journey Into Mystery" before both titles undergo a change for Marvel NOW!

Writing a prologue to a smaller, somewhat self-contained event provides Matt Fraction and Kieron Gillen a wonderful opportunity to synchronize their titles and coordinate characters. It also provides a natural point for the writing duo -- Fraction in particular -- to take inventory of what Asgardia has endured and where it stands today. This tale spans back in time to the war between Aesir and Vanir, visits the wedding of Odin and Freyja and stops by Valhalla in addition to spending a considerable portion in Broxton, Oklahoma.

The always-stellar art team of Alan Davis and Mark Farmer are joined by colorist Javier Rodriguez to compose visual wonderment that is a perfect fit for tales of gods. Rodriguez does not shy away from bold greens and purples on the same page, nor does he falter when Surtur's flame needs to be translated to hues of yellow, orange and red. As daring and unparalleled as Davis' figurework is, Rodriguez matches it color for outline all the way through "Mighty Thor" #18. Davis' Thor is as majestic and commanding a figure as possible. Walter Simonson is a high water mark for Thor artists, but Davis' work with the character demands consideration as a close second.

Beyond the collaboration of Loki and Thor, there is a subplot featuring Jeff Fischer (from the previous arc) certain to pay dividends as the grander "Everything Burns" arc progresses, but for now it is simply another item included in the inventory report that Fraction and Gillen have run on Asgardia's stock. This issue would have made for a perfect offering in Marvel's Point One program, but as the prologue to a longer story, it is certainly just as effective. If you've had an inkling to check out a Thor comic, this one includes everything for a new reader just the right thing for you at just the right time. I'll certainly be onboard to see just what remains once "Everything Burns."

"The Mighty Thor" #22, from Matt Fraction, Barry Kitson, Jay Leisten and Wil Quintana is all about consequences in the aftermath of Surtur being defeated. Delivered as an aftermath tale in the wake of "The Burning" storyline, this issue has little action or adventure and a great deal of discussion and drama. The plot is pretty simple: Odin wants Thor tried for disturbing Odin's exile. Of course, Thor did so for the good of all, but Odin chooses not to present it in such a manner.

Odin chooses to have Amora, the Enchantress, oversee the proceedings as an impartial advocate on his behalf. Hreidmar, king of the dwarves steps up to represent Thor. Through this device, Fraction is able to reflect on everything he has done to and through Thor over the course of this series. There is no real action or adventure in "The Mighty Thor" #22, save for one brief scene set in Limbo, but that doesn't make the issue an immediate sedative.

Barry Kitson's layouts, with Kitson sharing the finishing duties with Jay Leisten, pull the story together quite nicely. The visuals don't have the same weight as a fully-drawn Barry Kitson comic would, but there is no mistaking Kitson's influence throughout this issue. Quintana's colors help distinguish the flashback sequences from the vibrant present, enhancing the visual contrast of the story to match the point-counterpoint discourse between Amora and Hreidmar. In splitting time, however, Kitson's familiar style and character illustration doesn't shine through on every character in every panel, but his storytelling is predictably strong throughout.

"The Mighty Thor" #22 does provide a verdict on Thor's actions, but doesn't completely button up everything that Thor is about right now. Additionally, it leaves room for reader interpretation, making for an enjoyable "nothing" tale. With the upcoming "Thor: God of Thunder" series set to launch within a month, Fraction clearly leaves things open for incoming writer Jason Aaron to pick and choose. In the meantime, this issue provides a final inventory of how the legendary Asgardians intersect with the real world and how much richer the Marvel Universe is for it. All of the pieces are on the table, waiting to be polished up and used.
