blackest night superman 1 preview cover

IGN Comics: So today we're debuting the cover of Blackest Night #5, and alongside that piece of art and its solicit is the news and revelation of the Blackest Night "mastermind" – Nekron. Why did you select Nekron as the source or architect of the Black Lantern Corps?

Geoff Johns: "Who is Nekron?" He's the reason the Guardians swore to protect the universe. You'll more about that later.

So many people have been asking who is behind this – long time readers are like, "Is it Nekron?!" And I've been close-mouthed, not for any other reason than I wanted the first issue to be out and I wanted people to see how kick ass he looks now thanks to Ivan Reis and Joe Prado before saying, "Yes, we'll be using Nekron!" So revealing him on this cover and spurring people to start searching the Internet and their comic shops for everything about Nekron is a lot of fun.

For me it honestly was never a question. If I was going to do a Green Lantern storyline about the dead rising, the character I was going to use was going to be Nekron. He's pretty obscure, but like Black Hand, Sinestro and Hector Hammond – you know, these characters that had been a little under the radar for years or even decades – he's someone I wanted to pull out and reimagine and rebuild. And again as you're seeing, Ivan has done an incredible job, along with Joe Prado, on redesigning the character.

All you need to know about Nekron is that he is one of the most powerful dark forces in the universe... if not the most powerful. He is the darkness. He's someone I've wanted to explore for a while. But you'll learn more and more about him as the series goes on. It'll all become clear as you read more... but he's not really a villain. Nekron is existence.

IGN Comics: So he's not really driven in the same way that Sinestro or the Anti-Monitor might be?

Johns: Yeah, he's very different.

IGN Comics: There was one really interesting visual element I wanted to ask about. His scythe seems to be made of the black power battery. Is that just a cool nod or is the scythe literally made from the battery?

Johns: That's his own personal battery. He's not that big. –laughs- The cover is more symbolic than anything. He's big, but not 100 feet tall.

IGN Comics: It's hard to not notice the shackles all over him... is there any literal meaning we can derive from that?

Johns: That's all about who he is, where he's from and his existence. Again, he's the reason the Guardians had to protect the universe – he's the first evil that they ever attempted to imprison.

IGN Comics: I wanted to double-check on the relationship between Scaar, Black Hand and Nekron. Nekron is at the top, correct? Are there any more players in the Black Lantern Corps structure or is it pretty much these three?

Johns: Yeah, Nekron's the big boy. There are a lot more surprises coming up though throughout this story.

IGN Comics: Lastly, is there any specific significance to the heroes that are on the cover with Nekron?

Johns: Oh, could be... (facile immaginare cosa...)

IGN Comics: Thanks very much, Geoff!

Johns: No problem!

OH MIO DIO!!!

Impossible is nothing!...
