The Lone Ranger and Tonto are back and looking for trouble. Good thing there's plenty to find in the Old West. Get ready for some good old Hi-Yo Silver action coming your way.
Life was pretty sucky in the Old West. It's a good thing the Lone Ranger and Tonto were around but too bad if you on the receiving end of their justice.

The Good
In many Western tales, you get a sense that life wasn't easy. Usually the hardship has happened to the hero and they are out seeking justice. It doesn't seem like we often see the innocent bystanders get a lot of focus. In a possible bold move, this issue begins with the troubled life of another character rather than have the Lone Ranger appear on page one. This is a nice move as we get to know the victim before the Lone Ranger rides into the story. Seeing what life was like for some, even if a little dramatized, gives a sense that it wasn't always rootin' tootin' fun and adventure. There were a lot of victims that truly needed someone like the Lone Ranger to come along and save the day.

Throughout all the action, we also get a sense of who the Lone Ranger is behind his mask. He isn't simply a masked hero unleashing justice on the bad guys. There is a reason he does what he does and that's something that is often overlooked among heroes. We'll occasionally get the flashback reminder and there is some of that here. It's presented in a way for new readers to become familiar with the character but not another retelling of the origin long time readers already have seen many times.

There is a lot of emotion told through Esteve Polls' art, especially in the eyes. Life was tough and it shows on the characters. They almost have a tired look but do what they have to do to carry on. The lighting effects and shadows are a nice touch in adding to the storytelling.

The Bad
There is a very isolated feel to where the 'victim' lives. That makes sense since the Old West was very vast. It must have been perfect timing then when the Lone Ranger showed up.

As for the story, this is the first part of a six-issue arc. It's hard to get a sense of where the story is going. This definitely feels like a self-contained story. It was well played out but I didn't really get a sense of a hook to make me have an undying urge that I must pick up the next issue.

The Verdict
The Lone Ranger and Tonto are back. For those that have never read a Lone Ranger comic, this is extremely accessible. There is plenty of Old West action as the Lone Ranger is determined to hand out justice the way he knows how. In coming in to save the day, we get to see some of the motivation that drives him to be a hero. You do get a sense of the isolation in the Old West. This works in conveying what life was like for some but also gave the book a slightly isolated feel and felt a little convenient when the Lone Ranger managed to show up at the right time. As the first part of a new arc, it's a little difficult to see how it will tie into a bigger story as this felt pretty self-contained but that could be the hook in seeing how it all fits together and ties back to the Lone Ranger's personal life. If you've been interested in the Lone Ranger, here's your chance to jump into the action.

No one ever said the Wild West was fun. It was a place where war was hell, and it was also pretty constant. Men fought private wars over money, stature and location. Men fought wars within themselves over their choices. And one man fights an ongoing war to uphold justice. The Lone Ranger isn't the main character of this debut issue; instead, he's the catalyst of striving positivity amidst an austere and sad world. That Ande Parks made this choice is absolutely a good thing.

This issue might be labeled as the first in an arc, and there is room to build, but the story contained here can be enjoyed completely on its own with a satisfying conclusion. This is how more debut issues should be handled: make the reader understand a wholistic story involving this character and world, and offer some aspect that opens later into the wider narrative landscape. If you only sample this issue, you'll be happy you did. However, after this quality you'll most likely want what's to come next.

Parks fills these pages with many voices. We get an old timey editor, we get cinematic legend John Ford, we get the eponymous hero, and we also get the sad musings of a man named Nathan Jurgens. This new character endures such heartache and has a future horizon so bleak that his presence soaks into the pages and will hold you enthralled. The patois might throw you off and it is almost heavy handed, except that it's just so engaging and downright miserable. This man needs a win, and one the Lone Ranger can give him. Yet we know that win isn't going to erase the past defeat. Nothing can, or ever will.

This ability of the untamed landscape to instantly redirect your life and make every choice leading to this turn feel like your biggest life mistakes is the brutal truth of an unknown world. Parks isn't giving us a rosy world for the Ranger to ply his trade in. He might be able to clean up a mess and still look pretty but he won't always be there to stop the catastrophe in the first place. The brutal truth is that no one will be. If chance turns its back on you then you'll be damned, and forevermore.

Esteve Polls plays with action and setting well. His world feels full and inhabited. He certainly draws a fantastic guns blazing entrance for our hero. The main problem is that Polls needs to essay a lot of emotion on these pages and his style doesn't always match the subtlety needed. The colors from Marcelo Pinto don't help to accentuate his nuances at all. His trampling horses come through the dust pretty and yet his human faces are blotchy and distracting. These flaws won't slap you off the page, so it's not major, but they also won't draw you deeper into the story.

"The Lone Ranger" is a character entrenched in society as a virtue, a caricature, and this issue plays him as such and is all the better for it. Delving into the world, and the worldview, of this time and place gives me a better sense of this title than hearing any speeches about justice every could. If you like a tidy western yarn then this tale, which feels done in one, is just for you. It'll break your heart and make you feel.

oggi ho iniziato l'omnibus contenente tutta la prima serie,per il momento ho letto solo i primi 3 numeri che mi sono piaciuti veramente un sacco,in soli 3 numeri matthews è riuscito a inserire un sacco di cose nella trama,rispetto al film john(il lone ranger) è veramente il protagonista,ha anche una bella caratterizzazione,più serio e anche più impulsivo e credo anche che le intenzioni dell'autore siano quelle di far intraprendere un sorta di percorso psicologico al lone ranger per farlo diventare l'eroe che ci aspettiamo che diventi,se cosi fosse la cosa mi piacerebbe molto,anche il ruolo che è stato dato a tonto non mi dispiace,una sorta di "campanello" per far tornare john sui binari giusti,anche i villians non sono male,l'uomo vestito di nero,di cui si sa ancora poco,mi ricorda troppo billie bob thorton in fargo
i disegni di cariello sono perfetti per il tipo di storia,danno quel tocco di classe alla serie

no,non c'entra niente,è la serie del 2005 della dynamite,il film si è ispirato a questa serie solo per le origini del lone ranger(che tra l'altro è un peccato,avessero preso più spunti magari ne sarebbe uscito qualcosa di più carino),di edizione italiane c'è solo quella della planeta ma che è incompleta,ha stampato solo i primi 2 tp che mi pare contengano in totale 11 numeri americani(la serie è composta da 25 numeri più un numero zero),l'unico modo per avere la serie è prenderlo in originale,a me hanno regalato per natale l'omnibus con tutta la prima serie

La trama si è fatta ancora più interresante,non ci sono stati particolari colpi di scena,apparte l'identità di colui che sta dietro alle varie uccisioni dei ranger che comunque l'identitá era molto prevedibile,anche il binomio tonto lone ranger si fa sempre più interresanti,finalmente ha anche cambiato costume,questo nuovo è veramente una figata,perfetto per il personaggio

Letto fino al numero 11,questa serie è un crescendo,ogni numero è sempre meglio dell'altro

Devo dire che anche l'azione si è molto incrementata,la sparatoria nel numero 8 è bellissima,uno dei momenti più belli finora
Nota di merito al numero 11 che ho trovato bellissimo per via della storia del lupo che Matthews ha inserito,quasi toccante
Cariello anche lui continua a stupirmi,la tavola coi banditi in fila è magnifica,una delle mie preferite in assoluto,anche pope è stato bravissimo nel disegnare la storia del lupo
