Thanos #2 set the stage for a massive battle between the Mad Titan and the Shi'ar Imperial Guard. Issue #3 delivers that battle and little else. The plot doesn't advance very far in this issue, but the spectacle is enjoyable. Writer Jeff Lemire and Mike Deodato manage to simultaneously convey the raw power and fury of this feared villain and his growing frailty and desperation. Between the action-heavy approach and the surreal cosmic setting, Deodato's style feels much more at home than it has in many of his recent projects. His figures ooze power, and Frank Martin's colors enhance the surreal nature of the environments. Deodato's annoying reliance on photo-referenced figures is also greatly reduced here, though as usual his female figures tend to be interchangeable. Lemire is able to lend an extra spark to this prolonged brawl by cutting away to reality TV-style confessional interviews with various players in Thanos' life. Their reflections give the script a weight and context that the pointless narrative captions fail to achieve. -Jesse

Who's really the main character of this series - Thanos or his son, Thane? That answer was unclear before, and it's even less so ans the Mad Titan steps completely out of the spotlight in issue #4. Here, Jeff Lemire and Mike Deodato step back to trace Thane's journey over the past eight months as he lost an empire and found a new mission at his lowest point. This issue goes a long way towards fleshing out the motivations of both Thane and his new partner, Tryco Slatterus. In particular, it's fascinating to see an Oedipal relationship form between Thane, Thanos and Death. The dialogue could stand to be refined, however. Lemire taps heavily into characters and conflicts that began in Jonathan Hickman's Avengers run, but Lemire lack's Hickman's flair for grandiose wordplay. Also, this is one of those rare cases where fill-in art might actually have been preferable. Mike Deodato's style lacks the subtlety needed to render a story full of intimate personal interactions and psychological suffering. -Jesse

Altro bel numero, ma ora la questione è un'altra. Ho letto che Lemire sta pian piano lasciando la Marvel e ho letto che Thanos è in dirittura d'arrvio, sarà una mini quindi?

Dopo le boiate di Bendis, Humpries e Loeb sui GOTG e Nova sono contento che finalmente ci sia una serie ''cosmic'' della Marvel decente, e che Eros/Starfox e il Campione sono usciti dal dimenticatoio.

Il problema che ho con questa serie, però, è che questo non è il Thanos di Starlin sofisticato e moralmente ambiguo che affronta i suoi avversari più con l'astuzia che con i pugni e che aiuterebbe occasionalmente gli eroi a salvare l'universo, ma il banale Thanos di Hickman e Aaron.

Viene da chiedersi se nessuno degli attuali autori della Marvel abbia qualche famigliarità con Thanos Quest e la trilogia dell'infinito.

Sempre meglio del punching bag pistolero che ci ha dato Bendis in Avengers Assemble e Civil War II.
