Jason Aaron and Kieron Gillen make for natural writing partners, given their shared penchant for black humor and ridiculous situations. Those qualities are serving them well on their second Star Wars crossover. "The Screaming Citadel" isn't shaping up to be very notable in terms of plot or its relevance to Luke's quest to become a Jedi Knight, but ti does offer a winning blend of goofy yet high-stakes action and solid character drama. This issue stands out as it examines the growing friendship between Luke and Aphra and the discomfort that friendship causes Leia. Leave it to Beetee and Triple Zero of all characters to make Leia realize that she often treats her closest friends like peons. It's enough to make you wish Aphra were a permanent member of the ensemble Star Wars cast. Sadly, this crossover still has trouble measuring up to the high standard set by Marco Checchetto in the opening chapter. Andrea Broccardo's style offers a decent take on the films, but Broccardo's odd framing choices often ensure that characters are pushed too far into the background. The flat coloring style doesn't help either. -Jesse

It's no easy task to explore Luke Skywalker's quest to become a Jedi in the pre-Empire Strikes Back time period. The movies make it abundantly clear that Luke made little tangible progress in those three years. That's why it's so impressive to see writers Jason Aaron and Kieron Gillen adding something so meaningful to Luke's journey with the "Screaming Citadel" crossover. This finale issue showcases Luke's untapped potential as his powers are drawn forth by dark magic, but it also allows Luke to reach a crucial revelation about being a Jedi. Not to mention that the bond among Luke, Han, Leia and Sana is a lot of fun to read (enough that I wish Gillen had the opportunity to write these characters more often). Aphra experiences a few profound truths of her own here, promising some interesting character drama ahead as the series moves forward from the crossover. Andrea Broccardo's art is a little too light and cartoonish in tone for the dark nature of this story, but it's still a big step up from the Uncanny Valley visuals on display in Salvador Larroca's issues. -Jesse

Doctor Aphra #9 takes the series back to business as usual in the aftermath of the "Screaming Citadel" crossover, and that's an appealing prospect. Especially since it means artist Kev Walker is back in the fold. Walker is such a natural fit for this corner of the Star Wars universe. His quirky, Moebius-esque character designs capture the imagination in the same way the original movies did all those years ago, and in general he creates a very harsh, grungy space fantasy vibe that feels very Star Wars-y even if it doesn't necessarily emphasize cinematic realism. Writer Kieron GIllen uses the events of "Screaming Citadel" in subtle but effective ways as he blazes forward. There's a sense that Aphra's loneliness is beginning to weigh her down, even as she comes closer to achieving her professional goals. And while the comedic relief provided by her droids is always enjoyable, this issue strives to make Beetee and Triple Zero more active, self-motivated players in this storyline. The cliffhanger in particular promises big things to come for those two. -Jesse
