The latest issue of Doctor Aphra delivers more of the same, which isn't really a bad thing. More of Aphra squabbling with her estranged father. More of the duo dodging an Imperial battalion. More of Beetee and triple Zero reveling in their homicidal tendencies. This is certainly the most darkly entertaining Star Wars comic, but maybe not the most tightly paced one. However, this issue does succeed in shedding a bit more light on Aphra's latest Imperial nemesis. Suffice it to say, it's fun watching Kieron Gillen use the events of Rogue One to flesh out the inner workings of the post-Episode IV Empire. Kev Walker continues to bring a strong, distinctive look to this corner of the Star Wars universe, one that's a bit more stylized and Moebius-inspired than your typical Star Wars comic. Unfortunately, the storytelling becomes a little muddled during a key action sequence, as the art zooms in too close to properly distinguish between an AT-AT Walker and Black Krrsantan's ship. -Jesse

Onestamente non mi aspetto molto nemmeno dal crossover dato che Vader Down si è rivelato una gran delusione...

The latest chapter of Doctor Aphra delivers more of the same, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The book remains the most darkly entertaining addition to Marvel's Star Wars franchise. At this point, I'd happily read a comic featuring just Beetee and Triple Zero. But after five issues, it feels like we should be further along in the story of the Aphra family hunting down the elusive lost Jedi city. This issue finally begins to make progress on that front again, but the overall sense of pacing still feels sluggish. The art also takes a slight hit as the book brings in a new inker. Marc Deering's inks don't complement Kev Walker's pencils perfectly, and some of the texture and general quirkiness of Walker's style is diminished. It's mostly the banter between Aphra and her father (which takes a more honest, emotional tone here) and the comic relief provided by the droids that carries this issue. -Jesse

Doctor Aphra is a valuable addition to Marvel's Star Wars lineup because it feels so different. A lot of that stems from the main character, as Aphra is far more conniving, self-serving and sarcastic than your typical Star Wars protagonist. But she's human all the same, and this issue gets a lot of mileage out of exploring the rapidly thawing relationship between Aphra and her estranged father. It's also fascinating to see writer Kieron Gillen delve into a lost chapter of ancient Jedi lore. We see so little of the pre-Episode I Star Wars timeline these days that any deviation is a welcome one. Kev Walker's distinctive art style also goes a long way towards setting Doctor Aphra apart from its sister series. There's a very Euro comix-inspired vibe to this book in terms of character design and architecture. This issue did leave me all the more disappointed that Gillen didn't do more to flesh out Aphra's current nemesis, Captain Tolvan, but otherwise it wraps up the series' opening arc in strong form. -Jesse
