Marvel has spent so long trying to recapture the magic of that original Brian K. Vaughan/Adrian Alphona Runaways series without lasting success. The central idea behind this new series seems to be that there's no point dwelling in the past. Instead, Rainbow Rowell and Kris Anka are telling a story about a team that grew older, fell apart and are now seeking a way to move forward. The slight meta approach works well, especially with the resurrected Gert serving as the flabbergasted link to the team's past. The characterization in this series is top-notch. Rowell shows a firm handle on the medium despite being a newcomer to comics. And Anka is a perfect fit for the series. He really nails the looks of these characters, painting them all as older, wearier versions of their former selves. But there's still the problem that the book is off to a very slow start. It seems the entire thrust of this arc is getting the old gang back together. But given that this is a miniseries, that creates a big dilemma. Why spend so much time rebuilding the team if there's not going to be a chance to do anything with team when all is said and done? -Jesse
