Saladin Ahmed and Minkyu Jung go back to basics with The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #1, a visually gorgeous and accessible yet clunky reintroduction to the stretchy super-heroics of Kamala Khan. The real meat of this issue centers on Kamala's father, as he discovers his daughter's secret identity. It's a well-realized relationship that portrays the conflict between protecting your own child and accepting their identity as an independent adult. Around it, Ahmed retells Kamala's origin story, establishes her supporting cast and sprinkles in some goopy aliens. Despite the realism of Kamala's family life, Ahmed's dialogue favors function over form. He often propels the plot forward with simple statements that seem to forget the visual nature of the medium, flatly retelling Kamala's origins under the conceit of catching up with an old friend. Aesthetically, Minkyu Jung's artwork is as suited to action sequences as it is for quiet character moments. There's a slight manga flavor to his work that perfectly suits Kamala's super powers and intensifies the effectiveness of Ahmed's drama. Ultimately, some weak dialogue in The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #1 is eased by three-dimensional character relationships and the creative team's stellar visual arm.

The Magnificent Ms. Marvel goes back to basics with the best installment of Saladin Ahmed's run yet. In this issue, Kamala is going through the motions as she deals with her father's medical diagnosis. This leads to Kamala, Zoe, and Nakia to go on a road trip together. Up to this point, Magnificent Ms. Marvel was focusing on a world bigger than her own, which felt out of place for the hero, but Kamala fighting old enemies and zombies is the type of story I want to see for this title. It's Ms. Marvel dealing with trouble in her neighborhood with her friends by her side. And boy did this issue reminded me just how much I missed Zoe, Nakia, and Bruno — their dynamic brings a whole new dimension to the series that was absent with the titles' first arc. Joey Vazquez on pencils does a great job at displaying the diverse personalities from Kamala and her supporting cast, and is a wonderful guest artist for this arc. Hopefully The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #7 is just a taste of the type of stories Ahmed has planned for the future.
The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #8 (Published by Marvel Comics; Review by Kat Calamia; 'Rama Rating: 6 out of 10):
This arc started out as a very promising character-driven narrative as Nakia and Zoe join the fight, while Becky and Josh return to the forefront as adversaries, but The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #8 doesn't completely stick the landing. There are so many moments where the dynamic between Josh and the team could have been explored more that sadly only reaches a surface level. It was also disappointing to see Nakia and Zoe (heroes in their own right) just standing around during the battle. It's a letdown because we've seen these two supporting characters be more useful during G. Willow Wilson's run – they even wore Ms. Marvel's costume for a short period of time. As the story focuses more on the action, both Joey Vazquez and Alex Arizmendi have many moments to shine with their sleek and expressive pencils. Overall, what could have been a powerful character driven narrative becomes just another filler story about corporate zombies.

History reports are hard. Kamala thought this would be the biggest challenge her day would bring, until her father collapses onto the floor and is rushed to the hospital. Magnificent Ms. Marvel continues to find strength when focusing on Kamala's personal narrative as it intertwines with her superhero life. Writer Saladin Ahmed delivers this in stride with the origins of Kamala's father's sickness revealed and her relationship with Bruno starting to steam up with her new rush of emotions. I enjoyed seeing Kamala's balancing act, but the Mister Hyde fight, introduced towards the middle of the issue, felt obligatory — instead of helping to build tension, it made the narration lose momentum from its emotional storytelling. On artwork, Minkyu Jung returns on pencils with a delightful familiarity to the series in collaboration with long-standing colorist, Ian Herring, who deliver some great emotional scenes. Magnificent Ms. Marvel #9 is one of the series' stronger issues, as it does a better job at balancing Kamala's personal drama with her superhero responsibilities.

Since Ms. Marvel's debut, I've always seen Kamala as the modern Spider-Man. She's a geek like us who just wants to be a friendly neighborhood superhero. So perhaps it's not surprising to see the series take a deep dive into Spidey inspiration as Kamala is forced to fight her own alien costume. Magnificent Ms. Marvel #11 is one of the strongest issues from this volume to date as Saladin Ahmed and Minkyu Jung focuses on Kamala physically fighting her inner demons. There's a lot of sentiment to this issue, but it's also just plain old fun. Kamala must continue to fight throughout Jersey City while trying to keep her superhero identity a secret, which does become a challenge. Jung has some great comedic timing, especially when it comes to the costume dilemma.
