Fiery cosmic entities aside, the most engaging aspect to Dennis Hopeless' new series is his down-to-earth portrayal of the young Jean Grey. Burdened by her possible future while trying to define herself in the present, Hopeless does a great job of capturing the dueling nature of the character. That being said, much of Jean's growth this go-round comes from her interaction with others, namely those who have also been under the Phoenix's thrall. At first Hopeless' script threatens to spin out with all the various Mutants telling their tales but, aside from a few forced bits of dialogue, the overall concept works well in establishing and supporting Jean's state of mind going forward. For his part, Victor Ibanez makes a marked step forward, the script's varied set pieces offering plenty of visual opportunities. A standout spread featuring floors of rampaging Reavers offers a glimpse of this series' vast potential, making the wait for next month an impatient one. -Jeff

Jean Grey #2 (Published by Marvel Comics; Review by Kat Calamia; 'Rama Rating: 7 out of 10):

After her devastating vision of the Phoenix, Jean is on the hunt for answers, even if everyone thinks she's crazy. Jean Grey #2 is a fun, character-driven issue that brings together all the X-Men previously influenced by the Phoenix Force: Hope Summers, Rachel Summers, Colossus, Magik and Quentin Quire. Dennis Hopeless does a good job at showing the characters' unique relationship with the Phoenix and with one another as Jean's paranoia and fear continues to rise. Perhaps the most striking team-up of the issue is between Hope Summers and Jean, as Hopeless really narrows in on their unique similarities as well as their stark differences. (It's also nice to see Hope growing into her own, and picking up traits from her father Cable.) The pencils by Victor Ibanez is a weaker aspect for the issue, as certain scenes come off as crowded with multiple guest stars teaming up with Jean, but his artwork shines more when focusing on Jean Grey and her emotions. Overall, Jean Grey continues to be a great character-driven story, but I'm fearful the series will start becoming formulaic as Jean continues to visit different members of the Marvel universe to help her understand the mysteries of the Phoenix force.

Tutto sommato il numero mi è anche piaciuto, ma non come è stato scritto Namor, nope, neanche un po', troppo out of character. :nono:
Nel prossimo dovrebbe incontrare Odinson! :D

There's a clear formula to this series — Jean teams up with a guest star, learns from them, and in turn learns something about herself—but that sense of expectation in no way diminishes the series' overall entertainment value. When done right, as it is here in issue #3, it actually enhances it, Dennis Hopeless finding unique new avenues to explore a once familiar mythos. Pairing Jean with the ever self-assured Namor is a particularly fine stroke, Hopeless exposing a connection otherwise hidden behind the character's brash facade. The real star, however, is artist Victor Ibanez. Underutilized last issue, here Ibanez is turned loose, the book's underwater setting allowing for a host of gorgeous backdrops and frightening beasties. Featuring action spread after action spread, this issue serves as a true coming out party for Ibanez' talent, each page and panel stuffed with eye-catching detail. A formula is only a problem if it doesn't work, and this book is working just fine. -Jeff

Jean Grey #3 (Published by DC Comics; Review by Matthew Sibley; 'Rama Rating: 6 out of 10):

Jean takes the plunge this issue, heading beneath the surface of the sea to have a chat with Namor, everyone's favorite swarthy sea dog. They might have a connection in the Phoenix, but he's not really in the mood for talking, and neither is Dennis Hopeless who chooses to go for more action than the previous issues have provided. It's a prime place for it, there's all sorts of nasty sea creatures that need slaying, but Hopeless cuts away from what looks to be a juicy conversation in order to so at one point and his handle on Jean seems less firm than before. Victor Ibáñez does well enough in this underwater setting, making it feel like a land under the sea. Hypothetically, fights under the sea are more appealing than pure conversation, but in reality, it's disappointing to see Jean's inner monologue start to fade, even if it's replaced by sea monsters taking up the page.

Dopo Death of X e IvX, Emma è divenata una vamp, un pezzo grosso, il "come" fa veramente schifo, però il risultato finale... :dsi:

Great art can do a lot for almost any script. And Harvey Tolibao certainly put in the work for this issue. His pages with the orc army are particularly impressive, but the flashback sequences also has an epic flair. Frankly, Tolibao has all of the tools to be a superstar in this industry and I'm not sure why he isn't headlining his own series. His character work is terrific and he's got amazing sequential skills. Unfortunately, this seems to be a one-off issue, as opposed to a new gig for Tolibao. In theory, this is Jean Grey's book, but she plays more like a guest star in her own title when paired up with Thor. As in the original Thor, not Jane Foster. Through four issues, Dennis Hopeless keeps hitting the same notes with Jean's attempts to get guidance for her future fight with the Phoenix, and it's getting very stale and repetitive. I'm also not a big fan of the words that Hopeless puts in Jean's mouth, as they simply don't sound like the character even during her run in All-New X-Men. Jean Grey has never had her own book before, and yet the writer of said book doesn't seem to trust his own protagonist to carry a story without saddling her with constant guest stars. This is a good issue, but I want more out of this title than "good." -Blair
