Doctor Strange isn't the natural choice for a Secret Empire tie-in, especially considering that his current power level is very low. But this issue really places Strange in some tight situations because he doesn't have his usual mystic objects and because most of New York City is in a Darkforce bubble. Stephen Strange: Scavenger Supreme is actually pretty fun to follow, and one of his old enemies apparently has a high place in the new order. Dennis Hopeless can't resist bringing in Spider-Woman and Ben Urich from his recent run with those characters, and the ongoing argument between Jessica Drew and Strange has some genuinely funny moments. Niko Henrichon's art is also quite good, as it seems to evoke Chris Bachalo's style while including touches that are unique to Henrichon. This is very entertaining, and Strange now has a very different supporting cast than he's had in the past. It should be very interesting to see how he'll play off of the person who claims a favor from him at the end. -Blair

Issue #20 may mark the end of Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo's run, but it sure doesn't feel like a finale. If anything, the issue highlights the many unique aspects that made this series so consistently entertaining. It's inventive, character driven, and more than a little weird. With Aaron largely having wrapped up Wong's arc last chapter, the writer uses his final hurrah to change the trajectory of librarian Zelma Stanton. It's a solid bit of character advancement, made more so by the way Aaron ties her growth into Strange's own development. The structure of the script also allows for one more round of madcap magical mischief, with Bachalo and Kevin Nowlan turning in an appropriately zany installment. It does seem... strange... to not have Bachalo on hand for the Weirdworld sequence, but he nonetheless again manages to make the ordinary anything but. Strange appears in good hands going forward, but still, we're going to miss this occult odd couple. -Jeff

Taking over for an established creative team is tough enough, but doing so amidst an ongoing event certainly doesn't make things any easier. Such is the challenge Dennis Hopeless and Nico Henrichon find themselves faced with here, the still minimally powered Strange going up against the hordes of Hydra's otherworldly forces. On paper, the pairing of Strange, Spider-Woman and Kingpin Wilson Fisk is one curiously engaging, and to Hopeless' credit he pushes the oddity of that particular setup to its fullest. It's the execution that comes up somewhat lacking. Hopeless has long had a gift for clever and inventive banter, but here the various interjections and barbs feel less natural and more like Hopeless is trying to iron out an as of yet undefined tone. Expectation certainly plays into that, but it's still hard to envision an instance in which Fisk would make a Lord of the Rings reference. Henrichon's gnarled visuals entice, but it feels like we won't know the full degree of what this team has to offer until they're free of these narrative constraints. -Jeff

I didn't realize it until this issue, but this series has basically become a team-up between Doctor Strange and the Netflix Defenders. It's something that we probably won't see in live-action anytime soon, but it does offer some fun pairings, including Doctor Strange and the Kingpin. Nico Henrichon's art also elevats this issue with his depiction of the magical world and the relatively normal view from the Darkforce dimension. Dennis Hopeless has backed that up with a strong take on Strange, and an even better take on Baron Mordo. It's also a nice touch to see Mordo so powerful in this tale. He hasn't always been a real threat to Strange's survival, but he is this time. -Blair
