Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #8 (Published by Marvel Comics; Review by Kat Calamia; 'Rama Rating: 8 out of 10):

This issue puts a focus on Mary Jane as she tries to find her place in the Spider-family. This is a great character-driven issue that shows the extent Mary Jane will – including borrowing experimental biotechnology from Liz Allan. Gerry Conway and Ryan Stegman masterfully show the slight changes in Mary Jane's day-to-day life as the Venom symbiote starts to merge with her, particularly the end of the book closing into the sight of the Venom in MJ's eyes. The only negative towards this Venom storyline is Renew Your Vow's questionable continuity, as it's unclear if Eddie Brock's Venom exists in this universe or if Liz's symbiote is the first Venom appearance for this world. Stegman has some of his strongest pencils yet in this issue as he expresses MJ's emotional and physical changes that she must endure while wearing the symbiote. Stegman's design for MJ's symbiote is great as it's stylish and fits her fun personality. Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #8 sets up for an interesting and strong story as the side effects of the Venom symbiote tests MJ's will to be a superhero.

Gerry Conway and Ryan Stegman bring Peter Parker back into the narrative with this installment of The Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows as both Mary Jane and Peter deal with the consequences of MJ melding with the Venom symbiote. The strongest aspect of this issue is seeing MJ's day-to-day life as a family woman and superhero change as the Venom symbiote starts to take control. This forces MJ to search through her inner strength to fight the temptations of the symbiote. MJ's battle with the Venom is beautifully portrayed through guest artist Juan Frigeri's pencils. In this sequence Frigeri shows the battle MJ is having in her mind with the Venom while contrasting the battle Spider-Man is having with MJ and Venom's physical form. There are some intense emotions and action during these scenes as MJ grits her teeth and throws punches using all her might to release her connection with the symbiote. The Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #9 is not only a strong issue for Mary Jane, but also for her relationship with Peter. It's their connection with each other that allows MJ to harness enough strength to fight against one of Spider-Man's deadliest foes.

Ryan Stegman is the regular artist and co-writer of this book, and this is his first issue that he's written alone. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a mixed bag. Whenever the focus of the book is on Spider-Man and his daughter, it's gold. That relationship is already well-established in the series, even though Mary Jane is oddly absent for this issue. However, most of the time in this issue is spent on Normie Osborn, the extremely young grandson of Norman Osborn. Even if Normie is as intelligent as he keeps telling us in his inner monologue, none of the words in his head or the ones coming out of his mouth convincingly portray his age. The one exception is a scene late in the book that has a great callback to a very old issue of Spectacular Spider-Man. More character moments like that might actually make Normie interesting. But as an antagonist, he's still third rate for now. -Blair

The Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows presses the break on Mary Jane's intense Venom story to put the spotlight on series villain Normie Osborn. Normie Osborn is not your average young boy – he doesn't like birthday cakes, he's a C.E.O. of a big corporate company, and he's a super villain. But sadly, his odd personality and supervillain motives aren't explored enough in an issue that gives him so much panel time. It's not until the end of the issue, when he reacts to Spiderling and Spider-Man hugging each other, where we see true motive and emotion from Normie – and at this point, it's too late for us to care. The strongest aspect of the issue is the back-and-forth between Normie's narrative and Annie's story with her father. Writer Ryan Stegman is able to showcase their different upbringings and how this effects both Normie and Annie's personalities. It was also nice to see some bonding time between Annie and Peter since the last couple of issues put more focus on M.J. Nathan Stockman on pencils does a great job at following up on Stegman's art style, which was previously established at the beginning of the series, allowing Ryan Stegman to smoothly transition into full-time writing duties. The Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #10 misses a few beats with Normie Osborn's characterization, but is a fun filler issue when focusing on Peter and Annie's father/daughter dynamic.

Well, that change of heart came out of nowhere. This issue reads like it was intended to be the final Renew Your Vows story, since it goes out of its way to wrap up the lingering plotlines of the series. There's also a fun cameo appearance by the X-Men, but the focus stays with the Spider-Man family, and that's where this series has always found its best moments. Peter, Mary Jane and Annie are a family of superheroes in this world, whether they have superpowers or not. The early pages in this issue are impressive, as Brian Level gives the Goblin mech some good action movement. However, the reveal of the Goblin mech's pilot is a questionable choice, given how little time that person has appeared in this series. The best thing that Ryan Stegman contributes as writer is to give the narrative over to Annie, as she relates why this was her most important adventure. It's a little too easy for her to win over someone who has hated her family, but this gives Annie her own identity as a heroine. Now we'll see where Jody Houser and Nick Roche take the Spider-Man family from here. -Blair
