CitazioneMarvel Comics has announced Absolute Carnage, a new limited series that focuses on Cletus Kasady, better known as the symbiote serial killer Carnage.
Written by Donny Cates with art by Ryan Stegman, Absolute Carnage sends Kasady on a hunt for everyone who has ever worn a symbiote - and every symbiote itself. Leading up to the story, Carnage back-up features will appear in individual titles, a la "Hunt for Wolverine".

Absolute Carnage: Lethal Protectors #1 (Published by Marvel Comics; Review by Justin Partridge; 'Rama Rating: 4 out of 10):
It's Die Hard with monsters starring Misty Knight in Absolute Carnage: Lethal Protectors #1. Following up on teases from Absolute Carnage #2 and the Cult of Carnage one-shot, writer Frank Tieri throws Misty into the thick of a sacrifice led by the infected John Jameson and longtime Carnage cohorts Doppelganger and Shriek. But that's pretty much it, even though the cover suggests a full on street-heroes reunion, with characters like Iron Fist and Cloak and Dagger completely MIA. I have to admit it is disappointing to not get that story, but maybe some icky, horror flavored fun can be found in later issues. Artist Flaviano however really comes alive in the dingy, bloody setting, adapting well to the horrific imagery with smooth, almost modular character models. Perhaps once we get in and out of Ravencroft, Lethal Protectors will start to blossom, but for now, it seems too concerned with the dark and muck of this crossover event.
Absolute Carnage: Miles Morales #1 (Published by Marvel Comics; Review by Justin Partridge; 'Rama Rating: 6 out of 10):
Miles Morales takes a stand against the symbiote horde in Absolute Carnage: Miles Morales #1. Picking up on threads from the opening issues of this goopy event crossover, writer Saladin Ahmed delivers a perfectly serviceable side-story, highlighting Miles' charm and will to fight. Unfortunately, those that have read this week's Absolute Carnage #2 will already have the gist of this story, aside from the fairly obvious cliffhanger. But artist Federico Vicentini does, however, give this tie-in a distinctly slicker style than the stony main event. Rendered with cleaner lines and more velocity in the action, Vicentini's artwork sets itself apart as a tie-in nicely thanks to its divergent art style. That isn't nothing, but beyond that, Absolute Carnage: Miles Morales #1 may be for completionists only.
Absolute Carnage #2 (Published by Marvel Comics; Review by Justin Partridge; 'Rama Rating: 8 out of 10):
The Carnage horde grows in the driven second installment of Absolute Carnage. With the villains completely established as well as the stakes surrounding the symbiote codexes Carnage and Knull are after, Donny Cates puts Venom, Spider-Man and their allies on the defensive. He does so by extricating them from the pitched battle inside Ravencroft and dropping them into the streets of New York, as they scramble to warn anyone who's ever worn an alien costume. Cates' Spider-Man continues to add a fun, wry energy to the dire, horror-tinged event, but he doubles down on it in relation to Eddie, allowing the two to ease back into their sharp "frienemies" mode comfortably. Artist Ryan Stegman continues to impress as well — though the opening scenes are far more closely cropped and intimate than I would have expected, the scenes of Carnage and his minions flooding through the city is truly terrifying to behold. Though a bit more standard issue superhero fare than the opening, Absolute Carnage #2 shows that there is still some fun to be had in this newest symbiote-centric event.

While Robbie Reyes has the spotlight over in Jason Aaron's Avengers title, if you're looking for some old-school Ghost Rider action, you could do a lot worse than Absolute Carnage: Symbiote of Vengeance. Spinning off of Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman's Absolute Carnage event, writer Ed Brisson and artist Juan Frigeri pit Danny Ketch against the god-tier threat of Carnage, and while this story doesn't reinvent the hellfire-covered wheel, it's a solid actioner that will speak to fans of the 1990s-era Spirit of Vengeance.
Given that Venom is a relatively young character to hinge a company-wide event upon, it's always surprising to me to see Absolute Carnage spinoffs hinging not just on Cates and Stegman's ongoing series, but also on comparatively recent minis like Rick Remender and Cullen Bunn's Venom runs — and in this case, Symbiote of Vengeance owes a deep continuity debt to the 2012 limited series "Circle of Four," which tied Flash Thompson's Venom symbiote with Red Hulk, X-23, and an all-new Ghost Rider.
Still with me? Because that forgotten Spirit of Vengeance is ultimately the main driver of this one-shot, as Alejandra Jones' adventure with the Venom symbiote has placed her straight in the crosshairs of Cletus Kasady in the heart of Nicaragua. And with Johnny Blaze trapped in the underworld as the new king of Hell, it leaves '90s icon Danny Ketch to race to Central America in order to stop the rampaging Spider-Man villain. There's a lot of moving continuity parts that writer Ed Brisson has to juggle in order to facilitate this fairly straightforward conflict, so it's to his credit that the whole thing reads as smoothly as it does — you understand Alejandra's regrets about her own past misdeeds, you get Danny's misgivings about doing the Devil's bidding, and through it all, it feels like Carnage himself is having a grand old time.
That said, even with an expanded storyline with 30 pages, Brisson isn't able to key in too much about what makes Ghost Rider himself special, in part because he has to give nods to Remender, Bunn and Jason Aaron's work — there are a lot of callbacks back to 2011 and 2012 series, and while Brisson gets the basics of Ghost Rider's concept (a motorcycle covered in hellfire, the Penance Stare, a dubious relationship with the Devil, etc.), ultimately this story is just a beat-'em-up against Carnage. The flow and pacing of the fight works well thanks to the extra page count, but one could also plug in a character like Moon Knight or Daredevil or Blade, and not get too much different from what we're seeing here.
But to be honest, I don't really fault Brisson for that — there's only so much elasticity a character like Carnage has with other characters in the Marvel Universe, so a lot of his default reactions come across similarly in the other tie-in books, like Absolute Carnage vs. Deadpool, for example. For some readers, they are going to be happy enough either seeing a variation of the main Absolute Carnage series, or just to see a Ghost Rider riding a motorcycle again.
And to be honest, much of this book is a nice showcase for artist Juan Frigeri — he's got an angular, cartoony style that feels in that school of Iban Coello and R.B. Silva, but he really plays up the skulls and symbiotes nicely. While I don't know if his particular style is going to set the standard for Ghost Rider stories down the pike, his action choreography works well, and he definitely plays up the splash pages that Brisson gives him and knocks them out of the park. Colorist Dono Sanchez-Almara also deserves a lot of praise for keeping the art energetic and full of clarity — while there's a bit more of a superhero tone than necessarily a dark supernatural tone like you might expect from a Ghost Rider story, this is engaging work that's fun to read.
At the end of the day, that might be all you can ask for, especially since the creative team already had to play six degrees of separation to make Absolute Carnage: Symbiote of Vengeance work in the first place. Given that Brisson will be taking the wheel for the ongoing Ghost Rider series next month with artist Aaron Kuder, I'm not sure this tie-in feels representative of what we're going to see with the Spirit of Vengeance's own solo adventures — to be honest, it wouldn't shock me if this tie-in was meant to give the fledgling series a bit more runway, riding on the heels of the mega-popular Absolute Carnage event in order to bolster more sales before final order cutoff. Whether this was that calculated a move or not, Absolute Carnage: Symbiote of Vengeance will absolutely appeal to fans of both Ghost Rider and Carnage, and as far as tie-in comics often go, that's victory enough.

"You know my name. Now scream it!" Donny Cates goopy epic continues in Absolute Carnage #3. Setting both Eddie Brock and Venom at diametrically opposed stances for the incoming war, Donny Cates has injected a real urgency and pathos into the usual large scale event storytelling. Eddie wants to try to win without killing while Venom needs someone "strong enough to end this." He might have found it in the form of the Devil Hulk, but beyond the bombast and team-ups, Cates has really grounded this event with real deal emotions, largely based around Eddie, Venom, and Eddie's newly discovered son Dylan. Ryan Stegman gets a bit less to do in this third installment, as it's mostly exposition and regrouping from the last Carnage horde attack, but his stony, highly expressive pencils continue to impress (even if they are a touch too dark in spots). Big, splashy, but also heartfelt Absolute Carnage #3 continues to keep this event on solid legs.

ABSOLUTE CARNAGE: AVENGERS #1 Adds Second Artist
Updated September 27, 2019: Guiu Villanova has been added as a second artist for October 16's Absolute Carnage: Avengers #1.
This follows the addition of a second writer (Zac Thompson) in August, and Marvel pushing the book back a month.
The publisher hasn't specififed a reson for these changes.

Absolute Carnage: The Immortal Hulk #1 takes you into the mind of Bruce Banner, spinning directly out of events of Absolute Carnage and The Immortal Hulk. The issue does a good job of giving both fans of the event and both main series something to enjoy as it tackles Thunderbolt Ross and Hulk's connection to the symbiote. On the flip side, I do feel like these stories could have been explored in their respective series to have more time to breathe, but hopefully this is only the main titles scratching the surface. The artwork, by Filipe Andrade, was the weakest aspect of the issue, especially compared to Ryan Stegman and Joe Bennett's crisp and stunning pencils. The proportions felt very off as the issue catered to Bruce's dreamlike state. Overall, Absolute Carnage: The Immortal Hulk #1 is worth reading for the seeds it plants for the future of both titles, but doesn't warrant its own issue.

To Eddie Brock, the Venom symbiote functions as a layer of protection, of armor, from the world and threats around him. So what is he without it? In an attempt to stop Carnage from procuring more codices, Eddie's symbiote has attached itself to the Hulk, and while their battle ensues, the all-too-human Eddie still has to find a way to fight. Ryan Stegman's linework on the opening splash gets at the body horror that comes with the Hulk at this present moment in continuity, a tendril digging through an eyehole while another hand attempts to rip apart a jaw. As tie-in related material comes back into play during the middle of Absolute Carnage #4, Donny Cates' script loses its focus on Eddie, however - it's a stumbling block that comes from this crossover needing to be bigger than an arc of his ongoing Venom, even if the purpose of it all loops back into Eddie's journey by the end. The overall craziness and pace of the story is one that struggles to fit into the page count from a writing perspective, even though Stegman his inkers JP Mayer and Jay Leisten, plus colorist Frank Martin pack in plenty of the grotesque.
