Aquaman (USA) di Geoff Johns & Ivan Reis

[Doktor Sleepless]

I primi quattro numeri sono d'introduzione al personaggio, visto che prima d'ora non è mai interessato a nessuno.
Hanno una trama molto semplice e lineare, disegnata benissimo. Scorrono come un bicchiere d'acqua ma di certo non esaltano.
Con il quinto pare iniziare una storyline più articolata ed interessante, sostanzialmente:

Giudizio sospeso per quanto mi riguarda, aspetto di vedere come si evolve questo secondo story-arc.
(inizia bene, con una scena che omaggia Star Wars!)

Disegni a parte per ora non mi dice niente, sarà colpa del mio non apprezzamento dell'unico numero (#1) che ho letto finora.
Vediamo se inizio a cambiare idea dal #2

Ok! Ho recuperato tutti i numeri del reboot e dovrei essere a posto con l'ordine del preview d'ora in poi!
Che dire? La mia prima lettura di Aquaman (esclusa l'attuale JL) e devo dire che è davvero qualcosa di veramente bello! Johns sta spaccando, ma tanto tanto!

Concordo con tutti coloro che sostengono che dietro Arthur ci sia del grandissimo potenziale; imho quasi se non uguale a quello di LV! Si possono creare storyarc con la vita terrena come scenario di fondo oppure si può esplorare il mondo sotto la superficie dell'acqua per creare storie sicuramente meno scontate e con tante opportunità in più. Ci sono tutte le potenzialità per sviluppare una run lunga e brillante su questo personaggio, come lo è quella di GL!
Lo scrittore c'è, il disegnatore eccome se c'è   e le ambientazioni in cui spaziare non mancano assolutamente (come non mancavano in GL)!   C'è veramente tutto, dobbiamo sperare che continui così ed aspettare mese per mese!

Dopo ormai 8/9 mesi di letture del nuovo DC Universe (8 testate) devo dire però che gli che continuo ad attendere sempre con più desiderio restano quelli del pipistrello, un personaggio unico e con un'ambientazione che non può non piacere!

Black Manta is going after Prisoner! Mera learns more about Shin and Arthur's history.
The Good
The Prisoner is highlighted! I thought this character looked really cool, since his debut, and now that we actually get to see him in action, he's better than I could have ever imagined. We get a real taste of what his powers can do, although they may be a bit confusing. It seems Prisoner's powers come from the men he served in the military with, all of which seemed to have passed away. Their skills and "souls" seem to give him strength in certain areas of a fight, and it looks like the fallen soldiers are blasting out of thin air to help him. I really hope this guy stays alive. I'm very interested in him.

Johns is doing with Aquaman what he did with Green Lantern almost a decade ago. He's rebuilding the mythos and making him a deeper character. In this issue, there's a lot we learn about Aquaman, such as his connection as a child to Shin, and more importantly, the reason to why Black Manta and Aquaman hate each other. I won't spoil it here because it is a HUGE reveal and moment in Aquaman's history.

Usually, when this many new characters are introduced in a series, you're going to find a few you despise, and not because these characters are the antagonists, but because the characters are flat, annoying, or just poorly written. I don't have that feeling with this Aquaman series. While Ya'Wara may be my least favorite of the characters introduced, she's essential to the story and fits into the world so well. She's the more vicious side of justice that you need, especially when dealing with more "boy scout" like characters. No, Aquaman isn't a "boy scout" by any means, but compared to Ya'Wara, who has a different outlook on killing, he is.

As always, Ivan Reis' art is fantastic. With ever issue, he never disappoints. There's a lot of flashback scenes here, and with Rob Reis on colors, Ivan does a great job on conveying the past to the reader. You wouldn't even have to read what is going on to understand that these are flashback scenes. It's little things like that which make reading a comic so much easier for someone new to either the book or genre.

The Bad
I thought I was an Aquaman fanboy before this series... I think I've gotten worse since the new 52.

The Verdict
This is my second favorite DNcU book, closely following Batman. This issue reveals a ton about Aquaman's history and it really just makes this character a lot more dynamic. I loved the scenes with the Prisoner fighting Manta, and I love the numerous reveals in this issue. Ivan Reis art is fantastic, clear, and crisp, and as always, Johns kills it on this book.

The only thing I didn't like about this book is that I'm dangerously close to becoming an illogical, rabid, Aquaman fanboy, and it's all the fault of this series.

Overall, you have to pick up this series, and while this isn't the best jump on point, it's totally worth your time.
