Silver Surfer

:look:

Brian Reed and Lee Garbett deliver a story where Spider-Man finds out what the world would be like if he never existed. Get ready for a different kind of Spider-man story.
Spider-Man may not think he has a wonderful life but now he'll know what the world would be like without his existence.

The Good
You don't normally expect time travel stories dealing with Spider-Man. We have recently see Peter Parker deal with his Horizon Labs coworker, Grady Scraps' time experiment that threatened to destroy all of New York. Dan Slott handled the details of time travel and paradoxes superbly in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #678 and now it's Brian Reed's turn to take a shot.

As expected, another of Grady's experiments is involved here. As a result, Peter Parker finds himself in a world/timeline where Spider-Man doesn't exist. Is the world a better place without him? You'll have to read to find out. It doesn't quite go as you'd expect. To make matters worse, operating as Spider-Man or Peter Parker isn't easy when there's no record of his existence.

Lee Garbett gets a chance to shine and the opportunity to draw several characters. Everyone is immediately recognizable which adds to the pacing of of the story. The last thing you'd want is to have to try to figure out who anyone is supposed to be. The high school flashback sequence was also top notch.

It's not just a story about Spider-Man checking out how the world and those he know are different without him. This is a Spider-Man comic after all. There will be plenty of action, humor and suspense involved. You might even get a little teary-eyed. (Darn you, Brian Reed).

The best thing is we have a full-length annual story instead of having the main story and a back up or some other filler stories.

The Bad
After Grady's first near disaster with time experiments, you would think Horizon would put a stop to the possibility of destroying cities and timelines. This was a great look at what the world could have been like without Spider-Man but if felt a little too close to January's issue.

The story also is very interesting and touching at times but because it's so self-contained, you get the feeling that there won't be any mention of this in the regular title.

The Verdict
This is the type of stories we should have in comic book annuals. We don't need annual stories that tie into other comics (or annuals) and we don't need back up stories and layouts on Peter's apartment (and similar features we've seen in the past). This is a stand alone oversized story with an interesting twist. The unfortunate nature of being a stand alone story is you don't get a sense that we'll be seeing any repercussions from this issue pop up later. Lee Garbett does a great job on Brian Reed's script. It's unfortunate that we had a recent story centered around messing around with time but this story had a nice twist to it. If you're looking for a good stand alone story that delves into who Peter Parker/Spider-Man is, you definitely need to check this out.

Alla fine ho ordinato la variant del numero 1 autografata dalla Pichelli, non ho resistito!

Released on June 13, "Spider-Men" #1 reunites the team that introduced readers to Miles Morales: writer Brian Bendis, artist Sara Pichelli and colorist Justin Ponsor. It is, in no small way, one of the most momentous Spider-Man stories to be published in years, promising to unite Peter Parker with his much-celebrated alternate universe counterpart in a way that few readers thought would ever happen.

For all his work on the Ultimate version of Peter Parker, it's surprisingly rare to see Bendis writing the Marvel Universe Spider-Man in anything approaching a starring role. Spider-Man may be a constant presence in Bendis' Marvel Universe titles, but only ever as a supporting character. It probably isn't intentional, except as a measure to avoid diluting Peter Parker's voice between the two comic lines, but it's worked out for the best. To have Brian Bendis inside the head of the "real" Peter Parker in "Spider-Men" #1 gives the issue an immediate air of significance. Even before anything's happened, we know it's something special.

Similarly, we've never seen Pichelli draw the Marvel Universe like this either. At its best, New York is as much a character in Spider-Man's stories as the hero himself, so it's fitting that the visuals concentrate heavily on the look of the city. Indeed, the contrast between Marvel Universe New York and Ultimate New York is a major element of the first issue, and one that helps to build a huge amount of excitement for the events we're witnessing. But everything, from Pichelli's character designs to environments to page layouts, is designed to impress and entertain. It's cinematic not in presentation, but in ethos: visually sumptuous and escapist, yet instantly familiar.

Structurally, there's an obvious complaint about this issue, and if you've ever read a Bendis event book before you can probably guess what that is. Suffice to say, there's a lot of groundwork and only a little of the main event. You're not asked to wait for the story to begin and it isn't long before the two universes are interacting, but the big moment? The one we're all waiting for? Don't expect to find it early on.

The waiting is the only hard part about the issue, though -- in every other respect, it's a joy to read. Technically excellent with well-judged pace and tone, it's everything a Spider-Man fan could want. Now let's see more of it, and soon. The wait for issue #2 is going to be a hard one (especially for someone reading the issue two weeks before it's street date!) but one thing is sure: when the second part of the story arrives -- as the saying goes -- action will be our reward.

It's Spider-Man and Spider-Man. How could this happen? Brian Bendis and Sara Pichelli will answer that question here in the the crossover you never expected to see.
With a title like 'Spider-MEN,' you have to wonder, can this really be a crossover between the 616 universe and the Ultimate one? Is this a good idea or pushing things too far?

The Good
Upon hearing that Spider-Man would possibly be meeting Miles Morales, there's no denying that I had serious doubts. The Marvel Universe is rich in the the number of alternate realities and the Ultimate Universe has always thrived at staying in its own little corner. Now that the line between the Ultimate Universe and the 616 is going to become blurry, you can't help but be a little nervous.

The great thing is having Brian Michael Bendis on board as the writer. I wouldn't really think of him as a Spider-Man writer when it comes to the 616 universe (despite several appearances in Bendis' Avengers titles) but there's no question he owns the Ultimate version of Spidey.

The big factor on the success or failure will be the "how." How the heck can we see a crossover between these two universes? I won't go into the details but yes, Bendis makes it work. The issue has to set up this event. We start off with the Spider-Man we all know. But with this inevitable meeting, there are still lots of questions. The big one is where exactly will this crossover happen? Will we see Miles travel to the 616 universe or Spider-Man journey to the Ultimate universe? Or, could it be some other random universe? A question I brought up before was the fact that villains or people from alternate realities could abuse secrets from one world on another. Everyone knows Peter Parker was Spider-Man in the Ultimate universe. This is something that should really be explored.

What about the art? We've been wowed ever since Sara Pichelli came on board ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN. It's great to see her on what could be an extremely important series. She draws Spider-Man looking like Spider-Man. There's no question who is under the mask. But perhaps my favorite part was seeing the differences in New York Cities.

The Bad
It's the first issue. It has to set things up. Will we see the Spider-Men interact immediately? That would be too much if it happened right away with no build up. Despite that, it's a tiny bit frustrating in the way that we've been teased by this event and even though the first issue is here, we still have to wait for the real action to begin.

The Verdict
As a big fan of Spider-Man in the 616 and Ultimate universe, I was extremely nervous that this crossover would end up as a mere gimmick. Brian Michael Bendis knows what he's doing as he's mastered telling the story of Ultimate Spider-Man. We have a plausible 'reason' for this crossover to happen. There is plenty of ramifications to this meeting that needs to be explored. Having Sara Pichelli on the art duties is a treat and you will appreciate how distinctly she draws the characters and environments. As a first issue, we do have to go through some set up for this momentous story. Everything can't be and shouldn't be rushed. But with the way Bendis handles it, you'll be wishing for for the next issue as soon as you reach the final page. The SPIDER-MEN crossover is here and neither version will be the same after this. Bendis and Pichelli are just warming up here.
