Spinning out of Earth 2, Worlds' Finest #2 continues the introduction of Power Girl and Huntress as they come to terms with their new setting. While the Huntress is content with making a life of her new home, Power Girl still believes they can find a way back and focuses all her attention on doing so. Even if it means taking a few licks from a radiation-fueled baddie called Hakkou.
Paul Levitz brings new readers up to speed quickly. There are, however, a few bumps in the road. The book jumps around quite a bit, from present to past to times in between. These jumps are a little jarring as written and tend to slow down the overall pacing of the book. And while Levitz has a good handle on Power Girl's rough demeanor, he seems to have lost his voice with the Huntress. In her miniseries, his Huntress was pitch-perfect. In Worlds' Finest, she reads a bit off. Almost hesitant.

On art, George Perez continues to show why he's a legend in the industry. His lines are as definitive and crisp as ever. And, as we've come to expect, the man lives for drawing in details. No amount of background goes to waste. Stylistically, Perez has toned back the physical presence of his heroes. Although I don't really need a muscle-bound Power Girl, he does draw her on the small side, something that creates a slight visual disconnect when she cuts loose.

While lacking the emotional punch of Issue #1, Worlds' Finest #2 is still a solid read. One that hearkens back to the DC of old, which ironically, feels fresh in the New 52.

"Worlds' Finest" #2 is a book split into two; the past drawn by Kevin Maguire, the present by George Perez. It's a smart way to have two artists who are best served not drawing a full comic a month, but the thing I find surprising about "Worlds' Finest" #2 is that both halves of the book are written by Paul Levitz. The difference between past and present is strong enough that I find you almost have to think of them as separate comics.

The flashback sequences by Levitz and Maguire are great. Maguire's soft, gentle lines and forms are a delight to look at; it's good girl cheesecake, sure, but it's exceptionally drawn good girl art. Maguire draws his characters in a calm and beautiful manner, and Levitz's story works well with that style. Reading about the pair adjusting to being dropped into the main DC Universe is entertaining; I like the matter-of-fact way that Power Girl restocks rare earths for her company's manufacturing, or how blasé her staff has become about their boss' casual use of her super-powers. Reading their story reminds me almost of elements of the classic manga "Sanctuary" where Power Girl has taken the more legitimate path of gaining power, while Huntress sticks to the shadows and the underworld side for the duo.

The present day sequences by Levitz and Perez, though, are a drag. Perez's pencils feel a little stiff and lacking in energy, and there's something about his trademark details here that come across looking cramped and overworked rather than lush and textured. It doesn't help that the plot itself is dull with 12 of its 13 pages involving the pair fighting an extremely unexciting villain. The fight itself isn't interesting, which is part of the problem; neither Levitz nor Perez gives the characters anything out of the ordinary to do. This part of "Worlds' Finest" #2 is the essence of the word "slugfest."

"Worlds' Finest" has an interesting basic idea, and I'd like to see a book like this succeed. But while the flashback sequences feel right on target, the present day portion of the book could use a bit of a boost. This should be fun, but it ends up just a touch dull instead.

I believe summertime comics should, at their very essence, be fun reads, enjoyed in a hammock or on the floor in front of a box fan. "Worlds' Finest" #3 by Paul Levitz with art by George Pérez and Kevin Maguire is just such a comic: summertime fun in four-color splendor.

Levitz has the benefit of having not one, but two legendary artists to visualize his buddy tale starring Power Girl and Huntress. The issue opens in the present day, where George Pérez's hyper-detailed, rich artwork fills every pixel of every panel. The radioactive bad guy, Hakkou, fizzles with energy and Kirby Krackle. At one point, Hakkou's fingers are splayed out, in a classic Jack Kirby pose lovingly illustrating Pérez's admiration of the King. Although this isn't Pérez's best work in his career, it certainly isn't bad. As a matter of fact, I see this as Pérez trying new concepts and forcing himself to stretch a little bit. The end result is solid work from Pérez, which is miles ahead of the majority of other artists pushing pencils today.

By comparison, Kevin Maguire is economical and deceptively simple in his rendering of the past. His characters' emotions are more fluid than those Pérez crafts, making it appear as though Maguire says more with less. While he doesn't put as much detail into his panels, Maguire's pages in "Worlds' Finest" are wonderful. His depiction of Helena and Karen being sarcastic and funny, determined and crafty is exactly what you've come to expect from this master of emotion.

Unfortunately, we're three issues in and I'm not certain we've really put any road behind us. Huntress and Power Girl try to return home, but they've crossed paths with Hakkou and now can consider themselves his enemies and maybe even targets. Like the early issues of "Crisis on Infinite Earths," we get a tease of a story, but nothing complete enough to really measure out an accurate judgment. I'm eager for more of this book, and "Worlds' Finest" #3 is a wonderful example of what to expect from the title, it just needs a clear direction. As that materialized with "Crisis," I'm certain it will here. I just hope it does so soon.

The conclusion of the "Rebirth" story-arc is here, and it leaves something to be desired.
The Good
I liked Kevin Maguire's pencils on the flashback scenes of this issue a lot -- I thought they were fun and fluid, even though there were moments where I felt I needed to go back and take a closer look at the panels to see what was going on (the ca scene comes to mind). George Perez's pencils, however, just aren't what they used to be, I guess. I love when emotions translate through the expressions and movement of the characters, and I did not get that in this at all.

The flashbacks are the best part about the issue. You get a sense for who these girls are and their relationship to one another -- and I think that's interesting. I also like the idea of these two powerful ladies, globetrotting across the world on a big adventure, but there's something about it that I am just not buying 100% of the time. I love the scene where Helena is reminiscing about her past and her parents -- it's a little bit sad. I think it's a great scene and I really hope that we do get to learn more about the identities of these girls -- where they come from, who they are and what they are struggling with internally.

The Bad
I really was not a big fan of George Perez's pencils on this issue. To me, they just weren't what they used to be, I guess. I love when emotions translate through the expressions and movement of characters, and I did not get that in this issue very much at all. The girls seemed expressionless and very stoic, and you could not tell what they are feeling through the art at all.

Did anyone else find that the Japanese sailors in this issue were less than a little bit articulate? Okay, for the record, when I read something printed between two angle brackets (like so: < >), I assume that what is being said in a word bubble by a character is a direct translation. So I have to ask: in Paul Levitz's mind, does Japanese just not smoothly translate to English?

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I did feel slightly curious reading the panel. To me, it's as though the Japanese sailors couldn't form proper sentences when the American sailors (shown later in the issue) seem to have no problem. I posted the panel in part to reference what I mean. If anyone's speech should appear "broken" it should be Huntress' and not the Japanese sailors since she is speaking to them in Japanese in this panel.

There were some other fundamental flaws in this issue, as well. The fight with the giant atomic bomb eating monster was just okay -- not really what I thought to be thrilling. Like I mentioned above, the best moments in this issue are the flashbacks.

Did anyone else also notice the strategic hole that tore through Power Girl's costume, smack dab in the middle of her chest? If we're going to see that, what's the point in changing her costume in the first place? There was really nothing wrong with the old one -- especially not after Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray and Amanda Connor got their hands on her. Enough of my reminiscing about a series that was really good, though.

I did see this mentioned elsewhere, and I think it's a good point. The entire last two pages of this issue outline all the problems that appeared in the book. Huntress is exposed to a massive amount of radiation...and she's okay? Yet when Power Girl is, she has problems? something just isn't right. Unless this is character development in the making, it's a huge oversight by Levitz. Also, why would he pinpoint the flaws with the issue?

The Verdict
I think that if a little bit more thought were put into this issue, it would be fantastic. There's so much potential here: a book featuring two really kick butt female heroes with interesting dialogue and banter? Sign me up, please! Yet even with all of that potential I feel like this book has some flaws, and that's unfortunate. I do hope that those flashback scenes are addressed in the series' zero issue and that things eventually pick up for the two ladies. They are great characters that a whole lot of us DC fans were missing from the relaunch of their universe, but the series -- as it is -- just isn't doing them the justice the deserve.
