THE Comic Vine Review by Tony 'G-Man' Guerrero

Jonah Hex is having a little bit of trouble adjusting to the bustle and hustle of old Gotham City, but he still manages to get the job done in the series' third issue.
The Good

If I had to choose one word to describe Jonah Hex's character, it would probably have to be competent. Even though it's clear he's struggling a tiny bit with the way things work in Gotham, he's still taking care of business. For example, there's a great scene where Hex decides to trade a horse in for some basic supplies. In the old west that Hex is accustomed to, he would be able to go in and trade the horse for food, ammunition and what have you. However, you learn pretty quick that the whole barter system has pretty much gone out the window, and that the only way he will get his supplies is by following Gotham's monetary system. I think it's great that Palmiotti and Gray throw in this small detail, essentially highlighting the fact that things are definitely changing, and that the era of the cowboy/bounty hunter is evolving and essentially, coming to an end.

Beneath the primary plot (Jonah Hex versus a secret criminal organization) is the question of how Hex will be able to evolve in a changing world. Does he hold onto his roots, or accept evolution? How does Hex do his job and still adjust to the changing landscape? It's definitely interesting and it's something we didn't see a whole lot of in the previous Jonah Hex run by Gray and Palmiotti. Moritat's art again is really gorgeous and compliments this issue perfectly. Yet another Jonah Hex story that I can't get enough of.

The second part of this issue, also written by Gray and Palmiotti continues to reveal the story of El Diablo. Its impressive to me to see the creative team manage to tell a complete, riveting and exciting story in so few pages -- but they manage to do it perfectly. Jordi Bernet's art is gorgeous, simple and vibrant and compliments the writing well. We get a closer look at El Diablo, his abilities and who he is in a very entertaining story.
The Bad

The beginning of Jonah Hex was a bit slow, but the pace picked up quickly.
The Verdict

Overall, another solid issue of Jonah Hex. It's great when you get a comic that has a second story in the back, and it is equally as fun and entertaining as the main story. The art is fantastic. The story is solid and a lot of fun. I have definitely been enjoying this series. This issue is a really good introductory issue to the main story as well as to Jonah Hex's character, so if you haven't picked up any of these books yet, you can probably start with this issue to gauge whether or not it's a book you want to put on your pull list.

Jimmy Palmiotti Introduces The Barbary Ghost

With ALL-STAR WESTERN's extra page count, Justin and I were given a chance to not only expand the storylines of classic D.C. western characters, but to bring some new and exciting characters into the universe as well. Issue 4 of ALL-STAR WESTERN introduces the debut of a brand new character called The Barbary Ghost, featuring the incredible art of Phil Winslade, the vibrant colors of Dominic Regan and the master of comic book lettering, Rob Leigh. The story itself takes place way west of Gotham... in 1878 San Francisco, in the area known as the Barbary Coast: known for it's development during the California gold rush, and since then has become famous for its gambling, prostitution and crime. Our story follows the plight of the Tsen family, a group of Chinese immigrants coming to the new world to make a fresh start for themselves in America. More specifically, we focus on the daughter of the family, Yanmei, as she deals with crime lord Bo Long, and his gang of killers and thieves as they shake down her family for protection money. With any introduction of any new character, we establish the world around her, the supporting cast of her family members, and introduce a situation where the odds are stacked against our hero. We felt, looking at all the western characters out there, that featuring a character that has a Chinese background would be an interesting twist to the western genre, and at the same time introduce the reader to another story about the world back then that isn't covered very much in comics. The history of the old west is so rich and fascinating, we wanted to create characters that would not only be interesting, but also keep with the tradition of ALL-STAR WESTERN. The story itself is a classic tale of revenge set against some horrible conditions ...a story where we see how one person can step up against all odds, and make a difference. The Barbary Ghost has all the classic themes and we think just the right stuff to become an important part of the new D.C. universe.

"I have taken way their confusion and replaced it with obediance. I have taken away their fear of themselves and given them a fear of Darkseid. I have liberated them from the chaos of indecision. I have given them one straight path! One purpose! One goal: TO DIE FOR DARKSEID!"

James Robinson and JT Krul take over MEN OF WAR issue #7

James Robinson and JT Krul will contribute individual stand alone stories in MEN OF WAR issue #7. We caught up with Robinson and Krul to get the inside scoop on their contributions.

Is it true that you'll be writing MEN OF WAR #7?

JR: Absolutely. It's been a fun coming up with a story for the book. Lots of research.

JTK: Indeed. One of the coolest aspects of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 is that there is such a wide variety of books, crossing over different genres. And MEN OF WAR is a great chance to explore war stories for our times. So, when Joey Cavalieri called me about the opportunity, I was on board right away.

What can you tell us about your story in this stand alone issue?

JR: I can't speak for the other writer on the book, but for me, I've created a new DC war character I hope readers respond to. A British soldier in the S.A.S. in Afghanistan who takes one last mission upon himself before returning to England.

JTK: I'm telling a contemporary story about an American soldier serving in Iraq that finds himself fighting for his life along side his fellow soldiers after their helicopter is shot down. But, it's got another component to it that digs deeper into the life of a soldier and the struggle to navigate through obstacles both on and off the battlefield.

I've had the chance to meet and talk with many members of the Armed Forces over the years (a lot of them comic fans). I am always impressed with their easy-going, low key nature. You'd never know that they live and work in hostile environments. It's so above and beyond anything we as civilians experience. So, I wanted to tell a story about their resilience, but also confront some of the challenges they face in terms of living with that experience – the isolation it can bring when returning to family and friends.

Pick up MEN OF WAR #7 in March!

The Blackhawks have always worked in the shadows, hidden away from public view – but now that they've been caught on video, and that video has gone viral, the game has changed. Their U.N. masters have added Valkyrie to the team, a woman as skilled at navigating the world of public relations as she is at flying cutting-edge aircraft – it's too bad the rest of the Blackhawks hate her guts! But while the Blackhawks' greater mission is public knowledge, team leader Lincoln is still keeping some serious secrets!

Hex and Arkham join forces once again and embark on a whole new adventure.
The Good

Since it's launch in September, issue after issue, All-Star Western does not disappoint. Of all of the books to have launched as part of the New 52, All-Star Western has been one that captures the essence of old Gotham City in a dynamic way and tells an incredibly interesting story. The Jonah Hex and Amadeus Arkham team-up has given the title the perfect balance; between Arkham's hesitant, cautious nature and Hex's boldness and brashness, the series' fourth issue will keep you at the edge of your seat once again.

The team embarks on a new adventure; for 50,000 dollars Hex is hired to locate the son of a wealthy Gotham aristocrat -- what he finds may be more than he originally anticipated. Hex proves that for the right price, he is willing to do the work and 50 grand seems more than reasonable. Hex arrives at St. Jude's orphanage to find a young boy who had been rescued after having endured rat bites and dysentery -- this boy might be the clue that will lead both he and Arkham to the missing child.

Moritat returns to the series in this fourth issue and delivers an exceptional take on the story; his style uniquely rugged and rough, capturing the true essence of Jonah Hex brilliantly. Gray and Palmiotti deliver another fantastic story that continues to take readers down into the "dark underbelly of Gotham."

The second part of this issue is equally as interesting and entertaining as the first. Gray and Palmiotti team up with artist Phil Winslade to introduce a new character, The Barbary Ghost -- a legendary Chinese woman who appears to have mystical powers and an unquenchable thirst for vengeance. It's great to see Gray and Palmiotti's take on this new character. Really beautifully written second story that will leave you wanting more. The art by Phil Winslade is breathtaking; giving the character and the story a very pulpy feel that reminded me of western comics from long ago.
The Bad

The first portion of the story moves rather fast. Rather than having Hex go immediately to St. Jude's Orphanage I would have liked to see what steps he took to get there. How did he know where to go? What is the thought process behind his decisions? Aside from the pacing which seemed to move too quickly at times, this is another fantastic issue of All-Star Western.
The Verdict

Both All-Star Western stories are very exciting this week and both will leave you wanting more. While it's great to see Palmiotti and Gray continue to explore Jonah Hex in old Gotham, it's also nice to see them venture into new territory by introducing readers to their creator owned character "The Barbary Ghost." Yet another brilliantly executed issue of All-Star by artists Moritat and Phil Winslade. Both provide a unique style that really lends to tell a fantastic story.
