Batman: Curse of the White Knight #3 (Published by DC Black Label; Review by Pierce Lydon; 'Rama Rating: 5 out of 10)

Sean Gordon Murphy can sure draw the hell out of Gotham City, but his writing in Batman: Curse of the White Knight leaves a lot to be desired. Much like his initial White Knight limited series, Murphy just seems so careless about using language and imagery that will only appeal to the most reactionary contingent of comics readers - particularly the Joker yelling at Harley Quinn that "victimhood is your superpower" while making a crude abortion joke. Which is too bad, because not only does this fly in the face of the previously sympathetic characterization of the Joker in the previous White Knight series, but it also distracts from some grade-A fireworks, such as Azrael bringing down a longtime cast member from the GCPD. But beyond the pretty pictures, it's hard to see what Murphy is going for here, as some of his story beats feel like shock for shock value's sake - and establishing some poor precedent for some of the industry's least reputable elements.

Scusate volevo sapere una cosa: WK si basava sul passaggio alla sanità mentale del Joker e al bene, questo invece potrebbe essere visto come la reazione del Joker agli eventi accaduti? Un semplice sequel diretto? O c'è qualche tema di fondi esplicito che Murphy vuole affrontare? Grazie!

Murphy sta giocando con svariate tematiche, è un sequel quindi ha ripreso anche quelle introdotte nel primo capitolo e le sta portando avanti, poi ovviamente c'è anche qualcosa di nuovo, siccome ora sono usciti solo 3 numeri, non è ancora tutto ben definito, probabilmente

Batman: Curse of the White Knight #4 automatically gets you sucked in with its gut-wrenching opening sequence, as writer/artist Sean Murphy intercuts between Jim's death with a memory shared by Barbara and her father. These three exquisitely executed pages propel the rest of the issue as Barbara lives by her father's words – she fights back on her own terms. It's an issue filled with a lot of raw emotion, as Barbara is ready to kill the people responsible for her father's death, while Bruce deals with the consequences of keeping secrets, and contemplates if he wants to continue to keep his identity under wraps. These emotions are beautifully portrayed by Murphy's gritty pencils and Matt Hollingsworth's haunting colors. Batman: Curse of the White Knight #4 is one of the best issues of the franchise as it balances action and emotion as the Bat-Family mourns Jim Gordon. They explore the weight of what he meant to Gotham and, most importantly, each other.
