WWE #2 (Published by BOOM! Studios; Review by C.K. Stewart; 'Rama Rating: 9 out of 10):

Becoming the WWE heavyweight champion was supposed to be one of the best moments of Seth Rollins' life and career - so why does it feel more like a punishment than a privilege? WWE #2 follows Seth from his not entirely above board championship win through his ill-fated feud with the Beast Incarnate, Brock Lesnar. While Rollins remains unrepentant about the backs he's stabbed to get where he is, Dennis Hopeless' dialogue and Serg Acuna's artwork turn the somewhat one-dimensional television iteration of Rollins into a surprisingly relatable not-quite-protagonist. Acuna's character design skills do an incredible job selling the story, as Seth shifts through the panels from a bright-eyed and excited young first-time champ to an exhausted Authority member chafing under the "guidance" of Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. Filled with clever puns and spot-on interpretations of some of wrestling's most iconic figures, with an added bonus of a short but powerful Ultimate Warrior tale from writer Aubrey Sitterson, illustrator Ed McGuinness, and colorist Marcio Menyz, WWE #2 easily keeps the series' streak of strong issues alive.

WWE #3 (Published by BOOM! Studios; Review by C.K. Stewart; 'Rama Rating: 9 out of 10):

Seth Rollins' astronomical rise as WWE champion may have come to a screeching halt thanks to a knee injury, but WWE #3 writer Dennis Hopeless manages a surprisingly light-hearted look at Rollins' months-long absence from the WWE. Hopeless does an excellent job filling in the gaps of Rollins' television absence with an authentic look the slow spiral of a long recovery can take on someone. Seth comes home from the hospital with high hopes for a quick and healthy recovery, and against the backdrop of a series of extended conversations with Seth's mother, artist Serg Acuna does an excellent job capturing the visual cues of someone sinking into a difficult depression without even realizing it. By the time the New Day intervene to set Rollins on his road to rebuilding and reclaiming, Seth and his apartment are an emotional and physical mess. The creative team on WWE, including colorist Doug Garbark and letterer Jim Campbell, have done an incredible job giving the kayfabe world of WWE an aesthetic and tone that ground the characters without losing the more outlandish and comedic touches that make professional wrestling stand apart. Serg Acuna's best work of the series to date can be found in writer Tini Howard's back up story, "The Brawler and the Beast." Describing Irish brawler Finn's first encounter with the Demon King Bálor, Howard's folksy, metered tale sets the perfect rhythm for Acuna's gorgeously illustrated supernatural battle between the titular brawler and beast. Together the pair perfectly capture Bálor's in-ring persona and liven up his backstory in just two pages, and will leave you itching for a Bálor arc in the main series down the line (or even an NXT annual).

WWE: WrestleMania Special 2017 #1 (Published by BOOM! Studios; Review by Justin Partridge; 'Rama Rating: 9 out of 10):

"The Grand Daddy of Them All" is given the rousing anthology treatment in the WWE: WrestleMania Special 2017. Following some of the biggest stars and legends of WrestleMania, this one-shot provides both laughs and heart as it guides readers through some of the biggest "WrestleMania Moments." But this isn't just an empty retelling. Each creative team finds an interesting in road on each story, adding even more theatricality to the already big world of sports entertainment. Standouts include Aubrey Sitterson and Kendall Goode's tale of the ultimate underdog made good, Daniel Bryan, and the Archie by way of Love and Rockets story of Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens by writer Andrew Stott, artist Andy Belanger, and colorist Dee Cunniffe. It also contains a recount of the WWE's first Ladder Match from Box Brown, Jorge Corona, and Gabriel Cassata that reads like an extended Arrested Development gag and You Can't! Teach! That! In summation, if you are a mark, smark, or even if you have no idea what I just said, there is fun to be had with this year's WrestleMania Special.

WWE #3 (Published by BOOM! Studios; Review by C.K. Stewart, 'Rama Rating 9 out of 10):

The first arc of BOOM's first foray into the world of professional wrestling draws to a close with the triumphant return of Seth Rollins to the ring — or at least, that's Seth's goal, if he can outsmart his former mentor for once. Writer Dennis Hopeless offers up easily the most entertaining issue of the series so far with a behind-the-scenes look at Extreme Rules 2016, the pay-per-view event that had fans on the edge of their seats with anticipation over a rumored Rollins return (myself included, even as a fairly new fan). This week's issue showcases Hopeless's incredible ability to spin new stories out of long-spoiled shows, as he breathes new life into the Rollins/Triple H feud with a wild cat-and-mouse game featuring motorcycle stunts, hallway floods, and a series of delightful cameos from WWE superstars as they try to foil Seth's plans. Serg Acuna's main story art has improved consistently from issue to issue, and this is his strongest yet — whether by design or coincidence, Rollins seems almost more endearingly drawn with each page, following the slow transition he makes from Authority heel to rogue babyface. Writer Ryan Ferrier, illustrator Clay McCormack, and colorist Dee Cunniffe offer an eerie Bray Wyatt back-up story that could be a storyboard for any great Wyatt family promo on television — the shadowy colors and Luke Harper's intense face will leave you with goosebumps. The WWE team's first outing with this on-going has absolutely made it a number one contender amongst the licensed comics out there today, and continues to offer up a tale that even the smartest marks will find something in to enjoy.

WWE #5
Written by Dennis Hopeless and Justin Thibodeaux
Art by Serg Acuna, Doug Garbark, Rob Guillory and Taylor Wells
Lettering by Jim Campbell
Published by BOOM! Studios
Review by C.K. Stewart
'Rama Rating: 8 out of 10

Dennis Hopeless takes us back behind the scenes of Extreme Rules this week in WWE #5, picking up immediately where Seth Rollins' triumphant return left off in last month's issue. With Seth's introductory arc wrapped up, Hopeless turns his attention on WWE's "lunatic fringe," the off-kilter brawler Dean Ambrose, in an endearing introduction to a version of Ambrose wrestling fans don't usually get to see week to week.

The strength of Hopeless's storytelling skills unfortunately highlight the weakness of his characterization in this issue, however, as the dialogue he pens for Dean never seems to come quite as naturally to Hopeless as Seth's opening arc in the series. The work Hopeless does crafting a relatable and realistic background for Ambrose, whose actual difficult upbringing is well-documented through his pre-WWE career, is impressive and continues to skillfully tiptoe the real-but-not-real line Hopeless and Acuna have created for the unusual kayfabe world WWE's superstars inhabit.

Ambrose on screen is a rambunctious and unpredictable brawler with a penchant for comedic pratfalls at odds with his dogged, petty mean streak. As with Rollins, Hopeless turns Ambrose from a broadly-painted archetype to a real person with understandable motivations as a wrestler and interests outside the ring that he holds as passionately and obsessively as his WWE career goals.

And, as a Dean Ambrose mark myself, it's fun to see Hopeless introduce new friendships and motivations for Dean in the lead up to last year's eventful Money in the Bank pay-per-view. We may never get a Banks/Ambrose buddy comedy road trip on screen, but that's what Hopeless teases here, making coworkers with similarly ambiguous loyalties into a reluctant but light-hearted team. Banks' confrontation with Charlotte Flair and Ambrose's with the Beast, Brock Lesnar, and his advocate Paul Heyman, are cleverly paralleled and solidly set the stage for the next few issues.

The pages with Ambrose and Lesnar are some of Acuna's best action scenes of the series as well — Acuna focuses on huge impactful moments punctuated with emotional lines of dialogue to created one of the best-executed fights of the series to date. Banks and Ambrose are an unlikely pair of pals, and even though Hopeless doesn't seem quite as home with mostly-good guys in the wrestling world as he does with mostly-bad guys like Rollins and Flair, this introductory issue still promises an interesting arc.

Justin Thibodeaux and Rob Guillory return in tomorrow's issue as well, bringing the Power of Positivity back with another installment of "The New Day's Optimistic Odyssey." The sound effects in this tale are some of the visual highlights, and the biggest problem with their back-up story is that it's simply too short. How could only a page of Big E Langston facing off in rock 'em sock 'em robots with a beefed up unicorn be nearly enough? It's a delight to see Thibodeaux and Guillory's surreal time-travel adventure back in WWE #5, and though the Wyatt and Balor tales were certainly compelling as well, the brief New Day story will leave you hoping we get to stick with the fan-favorite trio for a few issues longer.

WWE #6 (Published by BOOM! Studios; Review by C.K. Stewart; 'Rama Rating 9 out of 10):

This week's issue of WWE #6 is easily the most endearing yet. Writer Dennis Hopeless offered up a weird partnership in Sasha Banks and Dean Ambrose at the start of this arc, and in this issue turns an almost unbelievable team-up into a warm-hearted and very real friendship. Artist Serg Acuna and colorist Doug Garbark shine in the moments Sasha and Dean spend together out on the road, showing Sasha shining under the colorful lights of a dance floor as Dean sulks, out of place, against the wall, or Sasha's reluctance and Dean's smug victorious grin when he convinces Sasha to partake in a few ribs at a roadside restaurant. This issue, and Mairghread Scott and Max Raynor's back up focused on John Cena, get at the heart of what makes WWE superstars such fan favorites: wrestling is athleticism wrapped up in camp and goofiness, but the athletes and their personas are real people with real motivations. This series offers up a glimpse at these wrestlers' lives once the cameras are off, lives we rarely ever get to see within the context of kayfabe, and the skillful blending of Hopeless and Acuna's off-camera world with the events on-screen is precisely what continues to make it such a fun read.
