THE FIX #6
STORY: NICK SPENCER
ART / COVER: STEVE LIEBER & RYAN HILL

OCTOBER 12 / 32 PAGES / FC / M / $3.99

Roy investigates a high-profile murder.

The Fix continues to be the best show on HBO that doesn't exist. The reason for that in large part comes down to its ever delightful cast of characters. Issue #5 isn't an obvious laugher, nor does it possess the usual situational hijinks we've come to expect. Rather, Nick Spencer instead adds a new member to the narrative in dude-bro mayor Kendall Kincaid, a tactless baby face who of course takes an immediate shine to charmer Roy. Spencer uses this new addition to both advance the plot surrounding Roy's obvious and not-so-obvious role in the recent murder of a socialite, as well as to provide yet another able springboard for Roy to hurl his patented blend of bs. Steve Lieber likewise takes to these back-and-forth's with the same comedic timing he's brought to everything else, his panels a masterclass in postural storytelling. If you aren't reading this book, fix that quick. -Jeff

The Fix #5 (Published by Image Comics; Review by David Pepose; 'Rama Rating: 9 out of 10):

Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber have such a clear working voice together that The Fix really isn't about the scam — it's about the journey we make along the way. As corrupt cop Ray has to weasel his way out of what could be a career-ender after he royally botches his bodyguard detail of a teenage starlet (who he happened to get supremely drunk beforehand), Spencer still maintains the pace of this darkly comedic book as he introduces "The Kid" — a.k.a., the Mayor of Los Angeles, a deliciously deviant millennial slacker who alternates between making nice for the camera and drawing genitalia on his late father's painted portrait. Lieber plays up this largely straight-faced comedy with perfection, before ratcheting up the (admittedly guilty) laughs with an over-the-top portrayal of pantomimed cunnilingus. This comic might give you a little bit of whiplash at the end of the issue, as Spencer suddenly launches ahead with some important plot progression, but this creative team's distinctive comedic style makes The Fix a can't-miss series.

The Fix is comic depravity at its finest, each issue seemingly topping itself in regards to outlandish moments. It's the kind of book where you know you shouldn't laugh but you also just can't help yourself, so pointed and well-honed is the collaboration between Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber. Issue #6 serves up some back-story of sorts, detailing the events that lead Roy to his less than legal side gig. The mile-a-minute banter Lieber uses throughout is deceptively layered, with some real meat nestled in among the inappropriate humor. The progression of last issue doesn't quite carry over, but Lieber again carries any lull with his spot-on body language. His work is so sharp that he can elicit a reaction with a mere gesture, something that proves quite handy given the variety of gestures Lieber calls into play. The Fix can be dark, it can be juvenile, but it's never anything less than 100% entertaining. -Jeff

The Will

Secondo voi qualcuno potrebbe portare questa serie in Italia? Avevo letto i primi 4 numeri ed era davvero eccezionale, l'ho interrotta solo perché non mi piace granché leggere in digitale

Daredevil

Spero di sì, serie fantastica.

If you were wondering why The Fix was nominated as one of IGN's Best New Comic Series of 2016, look no further than issue #7 for your answer. With the ever corruptible Roy mostly dominating the book's latest arc, Nick Spencer uses this issue as a way of checking in with his equally bumbling partner, Mac. In doing so Spencer creates a great parallel between the characters and their role in the book's ongoing events. Whereas Roy seemingly delights in and ultimately deserves the myriad headaches he's endured, Mac comes off as a simpler, if not exactly innocent, foil. That distinction proves particularly important here, as the repercussions of the men's actions hit Mac on a much more personal level (which is as telling of Roy as it is Mac). Steve Lieber ensures that same balance carries over to the book's art, where again his excellent physical choreography plays a key role. Comedy and crime is a tough mix in any format, but The Fix has it down pat. -Jeff

Of The Fix's two bumbling buddies, Mac has definitely gotten the shorter end of the story stick thus far. Nick Spencer aims to change that with his latest, at last putting him on an arc with similar momentum to that of partner Roy. The initial returns on that move are at first puzzling, particularly given how far removed Mac's story is from the book's primary mystery. What makes it work is Spencer's fantastic characterization. Usually stuck as second fiddle to the comically unlucky Roy, Mac is given a surprisingly meaty role this time around, and one with plenty of emotional layers. Those same layers again highlight the impressive balance of Spencer's scripts. His ability to move from heart wrenching to gut bursting is one of the book's strongest attributes, second only to Steve Lieber's equally nuanced pencils. For his many sight gags and pratfalls, there's a realism to Lieber's characters that makes every hijink and heartbreak all the more investing. -Jeff

The Fix #8 (Published by Image Comics; Review by Matthew Sibley; 'Rama Rating: 8 out of 10):

Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber's current comedy-crime vehicle may have slowed down from a storytelling perspective, but The Fix can still lay out a surprise when it wants to. This was true for Pretzels getting shot in the previous issue, and it remains true when it comes to where that plot leaves off in this issue. Pretzels' surgery gives the team a chance to show what his life's been like, and it really shows Lieber's talent. Pretzels ages over the course of the sequence, sometimes from panel to panel, and even if it isn't a drastic jump, it's evident that Pretzels has gotten older. This half leans into more emotional territory, leaving the bulk of the punchlines with the other half. For the moment it's working and it'll certainly be interesting to see if, and how, these plotlines come together.
