It may seem premature to anoint The Fix as one of the best titles on the shelf after only three issues, but the work Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber are doing here makes it worthy of the praise. Their not so subtle narrative continues to walk an extremely fine line between bumbling laugher and dark crime tale, with issue #3 providing the most precision blend yet. Where issue #2 deconstructed the prototypical "nice guy", issue #3 turns its sights on the love/hate relationship the public feels with those reared in the entertainment industry. Spencer's script is equal parts funny and incisive, so much so that it's tough to lock down the tone from one page to the next. This imbalance lends itself well to the book's many swerves, as each sudden twist feels genuinely surprising. Issue #3 is easily the darkest of the series so far, and if not for Lieber's excellent physical storytelling much of the underlying humor would be overwhelmed. Instead he's able to firmly straddle the razor's edge, delivering a book that's both entertaining and unnerving in its unflinching presentation. -Jeff
