There's a lot to be said for the oversized approach to this series. each 56-page issue is more akin to a mini-graphic novel than a monthly installment. This allows Jonathan Hickman and Tomm Coker to very quickly and cleanly build up this new universe and flesh out the main players. And with multiple story segments set at different points in time, sporadic prose segments and various bits of Hickman's trademark graphic design work, the series certainly isn't lacking in variety. The story does suffer at times from the way various characters allude to the vague, Lovecraftian-style threat pulling the strings of the financial sorcerers rate rather than the book actually shedding light on that threat. But the concept is clever, the noir-flavored art is evocative and Detective Dumas is quickly becoming a compelling lead protagonist. Plenty for Hickman fans to sink their teeth into, in other words. -Jesse

Reading each new issue of The Black Monday Murders is like eating a wholesome, filling meal. Not only does each issue clock in at a meaty 50 pages, but there's so much variety to the way Jonathan Hickman and Tomm Coker tell their story. Traditional comic book pages intermingle with prose segments and intricate graphic design work. The two creators always seem to know how to use the format to best enhance the story. Redacted text in the prose segments creates an aura of mystery and unease. The page structure in the comic book sequences maintains a perfect sense of pacing and flow, particularly as the extended police interrogation takes a decidedly dark turn. Through it all, there's a great sense of mood and a dark crime noir sensibility to this book that makes it feel unique among Hickman's library. -Jesse

io ho ordinato il tp sulla fiducia, lo leggerò fra un paio di mesi. quello che si dice in giro finora è che come al solito con hickman è una serie dalle premesse abbastanza complesse, con uso a scialare di schemi, mappe ed infografiche, narrazione su diversi piani temporali, il lunedì nero della borsa nel '29, culti esoterici.

insomma, l'autore ha dimostrato altre volte di non riuscire a mantenere tutto quello che promette (anche perché le premesse delle sue storie sono spesso grosse e intricate, e comunque sono molto più le cose belle che ha scritto che non quelle mosce), ma è una delle serie indipendenti che aspetto di più da molto tempo a questa parte.
