IDW's STAR TREK Ongoing Relaunching To Tie Into BEYOND

IDW's long-running Star Trek series will be relaunched as Star Trek: Boldly Go to coincide with the events of this week's Star Trek Beyond movie. Series writer Mike Johnson and artist Tony Shasteen will continue on this new series, which will pick up directly after the third movie.

"What better way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek?" asked newly-promoted IDW editor Sarah Gaydos. "And what better team to do it with? Mike and Tony are poised to take the series in such an exciting direction. I can't wait to introduce the world to these new characters... as well as some interesting friends and foes from the past."

Star Trek: Boldly Go is scheduled to debut in October. The current Star Trek series ends with August's #60.

Star Trek: Boldly Go #1 (Published by IDW Publishing; Review by Justin Partridge; 'Rama Rating: 10 out of 10):

Major shakeups are afoot for the Kelvin Timeline in Star Trek: Boldly Go #1. Set after the events of Star Trek Beyond, this new series from Mike Johnson finds the crew of the Enterprise assuming new and very interesting roles throughout the galaxy. While the separation of the crew is a great hook for this first issue, Johnson does us one better with a major callback to the original series films and a final page cliffhanger that is sure to leave Trekkies gasping for the second issue. Artist Tony Shasteen and colorist Davide Mastrolonardo deliver screen accurate character and costume designs to anchor the series, but also have the opportunity to stretch their design muscles with the title's two new starships, the Endeavor and Concord. Hot on the heels of another tremendous debut issue, Star Trek: Boldly Go #1 proves that IDW's new Trek titles are forces to be reckoned with.

It's ironic that this series' title invokes the "Boldly go where no man has gone before" mission statement, because there's nothing bold or groundbreaking about a Star Trek tale with the Borg as the lead antagonists. Furthermore, the Borg are so closely tied to Captain Picard and the Next Generation era that it's frustrating to see writer Mike Johnson shoehorning them into the rebooted movie timeline. This issue does little to suggest it's even worth the trouble. Surely there are other, better ways of building a threat to unify the currently scattered Enterprise crew. Borg aside, there's very little to give this new series emotional weight or impetus. The art frames the story as little more than a series of talking heads. Oddly, those heads sometimes appear distorted through a fisheye lens for no discernible reason. The coloring makes a valiant effort to replicate the shiny, lens flare-heavy aesthetic of the films, but it only makes the characters stand out awkwardly from their unnatural environments. -Jesse

Final Score:

3.8/10

Star Trek: Boldly Go #2 (Published by IDW Publishing; Review by Justin Partridge; 'Rama Rating: 8 out of 10):

Kirk and his new crew face the terror of the Borg in Star Trek: Boldly Go #2. Writer Mike Johnson, connecting the series back to the origins of the Kelvin Timeline, fully establishes the might of the Borg while also placing Kirk and his new crew in a precarious situation in regards to the shaky peace with the Romulans. This balancing act gives the issue an extra jolt of tension as Kirk must decide if he should risk open war with the Romulans in order to save the hostages taken by the Borg. Artist Tony Shasteen and colorist Davide Mastrolonardo deliver some rousing ship combat action, balanced out by emotional character interactions in the quieter scenes. Armed with big action and even bigger political implications for Starfleet Star Trek: Boldly Go #2 keeps the new series in the fight.
