Seeing Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso's names on a comic book cover is generally a good indication that the book in question is worth a purchase. This issue certainly bears that out, as it offers an engrossing, tightly plotted introduction to their latest creator-owned saga. One of Moonshine #1's most admirable qualities is its storytelling economy. Azzarello and Risso don't waste time on pointless introductions or exposition. They simply throw readers into the midst of this world where mafia players, lawmen, bootleggers and supernatural monsters all share the page. The result is an intriguing story that's as much simple character drama as it is horror or Prohibition-era crime story. Azzarello's strong characterization and Risso's distinctive character designs both work to immediately bring the cast to life. Risso also excels in working with the backwoods Appalachian setting. He even colors the book himself, ensuring that there's a haunting, moody vibe that makes the book as alluring as it is foreboding. It already looks like the creators have another winner on their hands. -Jesse

After Joe the Boss' NYC crew doesn't receive quite the "warm Southern welcome" they were expecting from Hiram Holt's family, it's all-out gang war! But when one side has a werewolf, it's hardly a fair fight.

Gangsters, hillbillies, and werewolves make for quite the winning combination. The second issue of Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso's latest features rich characters, a classic backwoods setting, and plenty of supernatural horror. It's pretty unorthodox, but it works thanks to Azzarello's great script ("We wanna git in bed with Mista Pirlo!") and Risso's stellar work. This comic feels like Southern Bastards crossed with a Raymond Chandler novel, only with monsters. The premise is simple, yet under Azzarello's bold direction the layers are beginning to form. A new element is thrown into the proceedings here, and it will be very interesting to see where things go from here. Azzarello gives each of his characters a distinct voice, but it's Risso's character designs that really make them pop. Holt's conniving offspring steal the spotlight here, Tempest is clearly ready to do more harm than good. This is a dangerous, ugly, unique world. - Joe
