When Power Rangers: Pink was first announced, the idea was that the series would offer a more focused look at Kimberly Hart that couldn't be found in the main series. Where the initial issues seemed intent to deliver on that promise, recent chapters have strayed off the mark, focusing more on convoluted set pieces over finding anything new to say about the character. Issue #4 continues that dispiriting trend, the team of Brenden Fletcher, Kelly Thompson and Tini Howard offering a number of stop-starts and about-faces that fail to generate any real momentum, or even interest. Artist Daniel Di Nicuolo continues to be a bright spot, but even his sharp designs can't overcome the feeling that this series' initial spark has lost its luster. With two issues left there's still time to prove us wrong, but as it stands now this book just isn't as vibrant, or mighty, as its name suggests. -Jeff

Kyle Higgins has done a solid job of upping the stakes in recent issues, but here he wisely pumps the brakes to allow for the recent events to really sink in. The dip in pace makes for a quieter issue – as quiet as an issue can be with a 30-foot shark man battling a robot dragon, in space — but ultimately the respite allows for some much needed character focus. There's still work to be done on that front, but the few choice scenes gifted here go a long way in furthering the team ethos that's been largely lacking. On art, Hendry Presetya isn't quite up to his usual standards. His pencils vary from page to page, sometimes under detailed to the point of looking unfinished, others so loaded with lines that it's tough to discern what's actually happening. Nevertheless, his final page is a hit, even if it's a gimmick that's more or less already been used in MMPR's sister, Kimberly-centric title. -Jeff

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers #9 (Published by Boom Studios; Review by Matthew Sibley; 'Rama Rating: 8 out of 10):

Kyle Higgins and Hendry Prasetya pull off the mighty feat of setting the table for the upcoming third act of this year-long narrative, while also continuing to drive the story forward without letting its momentum slow. The Billy and Goldar thread that's been lurking in the background for the previous couple of issues loops into the ongoing Zord problem in a way that may not necessarily be surprising, but keeps propelling the narrative onwards, taking only a page for a catch-up conversation before moving on with the plan. The creative team do a solid job of bringing this sequence to an end in a kinetic way, while also using the denouement to sprinkle in a sober tone for the Rangers and moving straight into new problems that they'll have to face. And as always Steve Orlando fills us in on what Bulk and Skull are up to, albeit in one of the lesser back-ups thus far, due to the heavy focus on set-up.

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: Pink #5 (Published by BOOM! Studios; Review by Matthew Sibley; 'Rama Rating: 8 out of 10)

In the penultimate issue, writers Brendan Fletcher, Kelly Thompson and Tini Howard bring the fight to Verto on a larger scale than previous issues. Offering a couple of surprise story beats along the way, it would be a satisfying conclusion to Kimberly's story within this miniseries, but instead the creative team offer up an exciting prospect for the impending and final issue. In the chaos of the brawl, Daniele de Nicuolo gets to draw everything from Putties to Rangers to Zords, and with colors from Sarah Stern, it looks as vivid as you'd expect from a franchise built around protagonists who wear differently colored suits. Another nice touch is Ed Dukeshire's lettering as the sound effects on the page are corresponded to the character whose actions are cause for said sound effect. The issue's plotting is tight, even when it's establishing what's to come in Issue #6, and provided that issue has the same qualities as this one, Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: Pink is guaranteed to be an excellent companion to the main series, if not better.
