Much like the drug-addled fever dreams of its characters, Mayday #1 is at once a kaleidoscope of content. Alex de Campi's premise starts easy enough—a KGB defector is caught between the country he betrayed and the one tasked with keeping him safe—but it's only a few pages in before things go quite unpredictably off the rails. And to the writer's credit, it almost works. The debut is certainly unique, in large part due to the psychedelic visual flair of artists Tony Parker and Blond, but everything happens at such an escalated pace that it's hard to really latch on to any particular character or storyline. That said, the world introduced here is an intriguing one, de Campi utilizing spoken language and muddled translation as a way of showing how his spies live and operate in their assigned world. So long as the creative team irons out the pace, this book has potential. -Jeff
