Issue #3 of the latest Brubaker and Phillips collaboration takes a trippy, chilly journey into the mind of its protagonist as Dylan slowly begins to embrace his "work". Things get off to a humorously meta start before deftly balancing the demonic horror with the much more conventional love triangle. Brubaker's script just an admiral job jumping back and forth as Dylan struggles with his feelings for Kira just as much, if not more, with the fact that he just shot a dude in the face. These are the multi-layered characters Brubaker handles so well, making them sympathetic even as they cross the lines of morality. Things aren't going to end well for Mason. Phillips offers his usual quality work, highlighted by Dylan's mind-bending journey through Times Square. Coney Island has never looked more desolate than it does here, the wintry cold settling in just as things begin to heat up. - Joe

Kill or Be Killed #4 (Published by Image Comics; Review by Matthew Sibley; 'Rama Rating: 9 out of 10):

Dylan finds himself falling further into the abyss in the conclusion to the first arc of Kill or be Killed. The devil inside him does its best to break out on a subway journey, and not only does he have to contend with this, but also his affair with Kira, a deteriorating relationship with Mason and further vigilante justice gone wrong which all serve to stack the odds against him massively. Sean Phillips is going the extra mile to deliver clean and evocative pages which feel like an homage to David Mazzucchelli, a feeling that's only bolstered by Elizabeth Breitweiser's colors making the setting dour, much like Batman: Year One's Gotham. As a conclusion to the arc, it sets David down a path he'll find it hard-pressed to return from, while also setting up characters and narrative arcs for the future which are sure to haunt Dylan just as much as the demon on his back.

In his recent afterword, Ed Brubaker posits that Kill or Be Killed has the potential to be he and Sean Phillips' longest-running series to date. If the quality of issue #5 is what we can look forward to on that run, here's hoping the creator is right. Starting his latest arc with the requisite and literal bang, Brubaker again showcases the layered characterization that up to now has been the book's greatest strength. It's surprising (if not a bit morally concerning) just how relatable Brubaker's Dylan is, particularly the more removed he gets from his demonic hanger-on. This issue is plenty violent, but beyond the shotgun blasts and exploding viscera there's a real story about a regular guy just trying to get his life back in order. It's that hook that makes this series so consistently compelling, though Phillips' absurdly detailed pages certainly help. This isn't a book you read quickly, but rather one you pore over and read again. If you doubted this premise had legs, issue #5 will set you right. -Jeff

Its supernatural bent aside, Kill or Be Killed is at its core a crime drama. And like all good crime dramas, there's nothing more interesting than when things start to unravel. Ed Brubaker's latest arc gives that first thread a hearty pull, the events of last issue thrusting lead Dylan into a spotlight none too welcome. The writer takes an interesting angle here, contrasting two different, and equally verbose, narratives that run concurrently with one another. As Dylan glorifies in his newfound murderous swagger, the dogged Detective Sharpe bends her own set of rules in an effort to drive Dylan in. While wordy, Brubaker's narration does an excellent job of breaking down the stakes of each player involved, even as he moves others around the periphery of our leads. It's a focused approach that absolutely thrives due to Sean Phillips' rich character work. He ensures that there's no such thing as a dull interaction, each head cock, grimace and leer offering its own wordless voice. -Jeff

Questa mi sa di Panini Comics :zuzu:
A febbraio è uscito l'ultimo numero di Velvet, ma di Bru non hanno annunciato più nulla. Ci sarebbe pure The Fade Out, già finita da mesi in USA.
Boh.
