Big concept? Check. Solid characterization? Check. Gorgeous art? Check. There's a lot of like in Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw's God Country, and a lot to love, too. Despite that, it's held back slightly by its own pacing. Cates really wants to set the stage here in a big way. By combining his Texas roots with the larger-than-life stories he grew up reading, Cates lays an essential foundation for this sci-fi/fantasy epic. He's joined by frequent collaborator Shaw, who has only continued to improve since their work together on Dark Horse's Buzzkill. God Country is gigantic in scale but also a hugely personal story with greater stakes beyond the fantastic elements, and that's what makes it so effective.

A lot of times, pacing is a matter of personal preference. Cates opts for a fairly decompressed approach in God Country #1. That serves to draw readers into the story slowly and become a bit more intimately familiar with the characters. Family dynamics are set up right away; a son returns home with his family to care for his Alzheimer's-stricken father who is on a path to be a danger to himself and others as his disease wracks his brain. Alzheimer's can be a tragic affliction and Cates doesn't shy away from showing how quickly it's affected this family unit. It's a deft bit of characterization that really buoys the pacing. Once the plot turns the corner to embrace its fantasy beats, there's a grounding to the proceedings that helps anchor readers as they move forward. And kudos to Cates for some real scene stealing narration at the end of the book. It's so good that it makes the page count feel really frustrating. It's what they call in the business "leaving them wanting more," and Cates does that with style.

Geoff Shaw is an excellent artist to have onboard. Honestly, the partnership between the writer and artist feels like it has the makings of one of those classic pairings that we've seen in comics history. I'm not saying they're a Morrison/Quitely or Loeb/Sale yet, but in reading their work together, it's clear to see less direction and more collaboration. Shaw's art has maintained its edge but gotten sharper. The Sean Murphy-esque line work remains but there's a bit of Jason Latour thrown in there for good measure. The inking really stands out to me as incredibly textured and intentional, which is fitting for the harsh West Texas setting. Panel and page composition is really strong as well. Shaw lets his excellent expression work dictate his shot choices and that helps readers feel the emotional core of the story more effectively as Cates slowly rolls out the conflict. Jason Wordie's coloring deserves mention as well, providing a really impressive color arc over the course of the book that mirrors the plot.

God Country is another in a line of Image titles with really strong core concepts. It's proof that creators are most at home in the worlds that they build wholesale. Shaw and Cates are a rare sort of pairing that we've gotten to see grow with each new collaboration, and this book really shows them crystallizing into something of a force. It's easy to see the DNA of a title like this from contemporaries such as Jason Aaron, Rick Remender and Mark Millar, to the looming influence of The King himself, Jack Kirby. If you haven't been paying attention to what Donny Cates has been doing, jump on the bandwagon now and pretend you've been here the whole time. God Country is without a doubt one of the best books on the stands this week.

This new series opens with a quote from Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian, which gives some idea of what tone to expect. It's a grim, harsh story set in rural Texas and featuring a son torn between his wife and daughter and one side and on his Alzheimer's-afflicted father on the other. Yet it's also a supernatural tale involving magical swords and reawakened gods. That makes for an inviting blend of character drama and fantasy, one that's made all the more palatable by Geoff Shaw's gritty but flowing art style and Jason Wordie's haunting colors. Writer Donny Cates does a fine job of introducing the main players elegantly and without relying on exposition. In true McCarthy fashion, the dialogue and imagery speak volumes. The narration is a little much, though. As much as it succeeds in giving a weight and context to these events, it tends to be too little heavy-handed for its own good. -Jesse

God Country #1 (Published by Image Comics; Review by C.K. Stewart, 'Rama Rating 9 out of 10):

God Country is a gorgeously illustrated modern tall tale, blending elements of sweeping science fiction with smaller scale family drama in this week's captivating first issue. Writer Donny Cates introduces us to Roy and Jane Quinlan, recently returned to Roy's childhood home to care for his ailing father. After a devastating supernatural storm ravages the town, the Quinlan family finds themselves turning to Quinlan family patriarch Emmett to stave off the mysterious beasts left behind in the storm's wake. Together, artist Geoff Shaw and colorist Jason Wordie do an incredible job bringing the Quinlans' rural hometown to life - you can smell the dust in the air, hear the rain pounding down, serving as a grim backdrop for Roy and Jane's struggles with Emmett's illness. Shaw and Wordie have created a beautiful world to accompany Cates' intriguing premise, making God Country a title to watch this year.

You can draw plenty of comparisons between God Country and Marvel's Thor comics, but at the end of the day, both work for the same reason. This is a high fantasy story anchored by very grounded, very human drama. Even as elderly hero Emmett Quinlan defies the gods who want him to hand over his mystical sword, he also has to come to terms with overcoming his Alzheimer's and truly meeting his family for the first time in years. That balance between big and small is the source of this book's appeal. The humor doesn't hurt, either. There's nothing like a sassy Texan to put a god of war in his place. Geoff Shaw's art is a big draw, too. His style is fairly loose and sketchy, which suits the rural Texas setting yet also epic enough to account for magical swords and armored gods. Jason Wordie's textured colors are a big help in this regard, as they channel both the picturesque setting and the ethereal energies unleashed by Emmett's transformation. -Jesse

God Country #2 (Published by Image Comics; Review by C.K. Stewart; 'Rama Rating: 7 out of 10):

Donny Cates' God Country #2 falters with a dialogue-heavy issue that fails to capture the impact of the series' impressive debut. After vanquishing a demon and rescuing his family with an assist from the magical sword Valofax, Emmett Quinlan finds himself face to face with another deity chasing after the sword's power. Geoff Shaw and Jason Wordie's artwork is as gorgeous as ever, particularly the purples and reds Wordie uses to depict displays of Valofax' supernatural power. The dialogue doesn't quite live up to their work though -what should be an emotional conversation about the devastating impact of memory loss reads as bland exposition revealed in a conversation between two strangers as the conflict between the Quinlan family that drove the first issue seems to take a backseat. Emmett's Alzheimer's is essentially in remission when he wields the sword, and his understandable desperation to keep it in his possession and retain his memories in the face of godly intervention offers an intriguing premise from Cates that will keep God Country a book to watch for me in the long run. After the emotional torrent of the debut, however, this month's dry follow up is a bit of a disappointment.

In the hands of a different creative team, God Country might not be all that special. The story itself is pretty straightforward - as straightforward as a story of an elderly man reclaiming a mystical sword and battling gods can be, at any rate. It's really all in the execution. Geoff Shaw makes a strong statement with each new issue. His work crackles with energy and  and has no trouble capturing the full scope of this epic showdown. Shaw has a real knack for blending the harsh, gritty beauty of the rural Texan setting with larger-than-life, fantastical imagery. His range is as impressive as his actual storytelling. And writer Donny Cates succeeds in crafting an emotionally affecting story. Despite all the spectacle, the book never loses sight of the very real, very personal family drama at its core. This issue in particular features some very raw, intense moments that promise to fuel a very dramatic final chapter. -Jesse
