The first of Valiant's prestige-format limited releases, Britannia #1 offers a new sort of hero in Antonius Axia. A Centurion during the reign of Nero, Axia - be it by fate or design - is charged with defending Rome from the unnatural and unexplainable creatures that hide just out of reason. At first glance the book appears more typical in its Roman fare, with ample bouts of bloodletting, copulation and political scheming. However, as the book goes on and the horrors mount, it becomes clear that Peter Milligan has a different sort of story in mind, one that borrows from a number of physical and psychological influences intended to assail its steadfast hero. In many ways Axia represents the reader, trying to make sense of what's going on even as things become harder and harder to define. It's an immersive entry to grander designs, something Juan Jose Ryp furthers with his strong pencils. The artist ably captures the lavish feel of the era, combining sweeping backdrops with gritty, in-the-muck action. With the setup out of the way, expect the narrative, and blood, to fly. -Jeff

Antonius' past and present collide in the rousingly strange conclusion of Britannia #4. Peter Milligan wastes little time blasting through this final installment, drawing together narrative threads that he introduced in the first issue and putting a violent, monster-filled bow on Antonius' investigation in far off Britannia and delving deeper into the otherworldly religion that has crept across the realm. Artist Juan Jose Ryp and colorist Jordie Bellaire keep the tightly blocked sword and sorcery tone going strong for this final issue, complete with rich browns, luminescent greens and fiery yellows poured across each page. Though it started as a strange detective tale set in a bygone era, Peter Milligan, Juan Jose Ryp and Jordie Bellaire's Britannia #4 ends the series on a solidly strange and entertaining note.
