Like an Oprah giveaway gone wrong, the latest dispersal of Bloodshot's nanites results in a sizable jump in scope. And unlike Bloodshot's first run-in with his red-circled relatives, this one feels bigger in every sense of the word, Jeff Lemire pulling in players from all corners of the Valiant Universe. More importantly, he doesn't wait long to use them, balancing necessary setup with some instant narrative shake-ups. The quick hits solidify the book's event feel, something Doug Braithwaite furthers with his massive scale visuals. While at times the artist's thicker line style and light ink work can come off as unfinished, he nonetheless serves up a solid first chapter, one filled to the brim with violence and destruction. The book's final pages offer the most compelling hook as to what kind of dangers lie ahead, making for an easy in to what is shaping up to be one of Bloodshot's biggest tales. -Jeff

The Bloodshot nanites go stateside with disastrous consequences in Bloodshot U.S.A. #1. Building on both recent event titles and the Bloodshot ongoing title, writer Jeff Lemire blankets New York in the nanite virus to give Unity, Ninjak, and the gang of Bloodshots one hell of a problem to solve in this fast paced opening issue. Artist Doug Braithwaite and colorist Brian Reber deliver harrowing splash pages of the destruction those that are infected are wreaking throughout New York, tempered by expressive character shots peppered throughout the wall to wall action. Instantly accessible but still standing as the latest in a long line of Valiant Entertainment events, Bloodshot U.S.A. #1 is a fiery and grand start to the latest Bloodshot epic.

Issue #3 of Bloodshot U.S.A. is the rare event issue that spends little time focusing on the actual event. Rather than put his focus on the nanite-driven war taking place in the streets, Jeff Lemire instead opts to zero in on the ever-complicated and often tragic relationship between Ray and Kay. It's a move that requires a certain amount of past investment, as the writer goes back to previous events (and event books) as a way of informing the events of the present. Those who have been on board since The Valiant will come away impressed with the myriad layers Lemire peels back here, but it's safe to say that the uninitiated will walk away more confused than enthused. Nonetheless, it's a solid and effective culmination of years worth of setup, one artfully depicted by Doug Braithwaite. His sketch-heavy style doesn't lend itself particularly well to the more youthful sequences of the book, but he does a great job of capturing and enhancing the escalating emotional tone. -Jeff

Bloodshot U.S.A. #3 (Published by Valiant Entertainment; Review by Justin Partridge; 'Rama Rating: 8 out of 10:

Bloodshot U.S.A.'s three-fronted assault on New York gets trippy in its third installment. Reunited with his former love turned nanite-infused killing machine Deathmate, Bloodshot must stake his life and sanity on ridding her body of the nanites and taking them into his own. While Jeff Lemire delivers a surprisingly emotional journey into the self with that plot, the rest of the event's plotlines stay tense and appropriately big. Aiding in that big budget feeling is artist Doug Braithwaite and colorist Brian Reber, both of whom fill this issue with dense splash pages saturated in darkly metallic colors. Though it took a bit to find its feet in the beginning Bloodshot U.S.A. #3 puts the event back in the conversation of how good an event comic can be.

Bloodshot U.S.A. #4 (Published by Valiant Entertainment; Review by Justin Partridge; 'Rama Rating: 7 out of 10):

Bloodshot's latest mission comes to a close in the final issue of Bloodshot U.S.A.. As Bloodshot is reunited with his lost love Magic, his rag tag team of allies are having trouble holding the line against the nanite-infected population of New York as the fight reached a fever pitch. Jeff Lemire keeps the action moving at a decent clip and its nice to see him pulling so many threads together from the previous arcs into this story. That said, the resolution to the story is a bit lackadaisical and the final pages place Ray in a place we have seen him end up before. Artist Doug Braithwaite and colorist Brian Reber take full advantage of the chaos of this finale issue, playing up the din of battle and the mass of enemies pushing against the assembled heroes. Though it isn't exactly a perfect finale Bloodshot U.S.A #4 stands as a fine example of how big Valiant is willing to go.
