Abraham Slam has faced off against gangsters, bank robbers, and a radioactive octopus, but his greatest challenge yet is having Tammy Trueheart over for family dinner. It's not quite "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner", but the laughs and drama blend together in similar fashion, with Gail's rebellious streak and Mark's sarcasm giving their aging patriarch fits. This is the most unconventional family in all of comics, and Lemire's script takes you from laughter to heartache and back again with ease. Seriously, how could anyone not love a comic that features a character named Punch Socklingham? Dean Ormstron is the perfect artist to bring Jeff Lemire's love letter to the Golden Age of comics to life, his pulpy style capturing both the present day and flashbacks gracefully. Colonel Weird's transformation is strikingly rendered, and shows how much depth Lemire's characters have to offer. Black Hammer is a special kind of comic. - Joe

Black Hammer #4 (Published by Dark Horse Comics; Review by Justin Partridge; 'Rama Rating: 9 out of 10):

Jeff Lemire delivers origin stories and awkward family dinners this week in Black Hammer #4. Framed by a look at the early career of Abraham Slam, Lemire pits the hidden heroes of the series against their toughest foe to date, someone from the outside. As Abraham and his date struggle through dinner, Lemire cranks up the tension and deception as everyone plays their parts to the best of their abilities, some a bit more reluctantly than others. Artist Dean Ormston and colorist Dave Stewart adapt very well to the shifting time frames of this issue, rendering the rollicking action of the past with vigor and sepia toned color schemes while the action in the present takes on a sickly mundane look lit by warm natural lighting. Though the central mystery of the series is still shrouded, Black Hammer #4 shows that its real strength lies in its characters.

Ho trovato i primi tre in fumetteria, li ho presi subito.

Tempo fa in una intervista Lemire disse che non voleva fare un annual che fosse solo un filler, come fanno molti autori ora per fare soldi, ma voleva riportare il concetto dell'annual a quello che era nella silver/bronze age: un vero e proprio evento;

Initially, it seemed surprising that Black Hammer was planned as an ongoing series rather than a mini. The concept, while engrossing, doesn't seem to justify the long from treatment. This issue proves otherwise. Black Hammer #6 caps off the book's first story arc with new story wrinkles and complications that serve to make these heroes' extended "vacation" that much more unpredictable. While that's unfolding, Jeff Lemire and Dean Ormston also take the opportunity to explore the tragic history of Madame Butterfly. Just as previous issues have tapped into familiar periods of comic book history, this issue pays homage to the classic horror comics of the '50s. That blend of ordinary human drama and old-school chills works very well indeed. It certainly plays well to Ormston's storytelling strengths. He and colorist Dave Stewart craft an issue worthy of Hellboy or Swamp Thing. -Jesse

Maybe labeling this issue "giant-sized" is a bit of a stretch, but it does offer a nice, satisfying standalone story that expands on the cast of the main series. Jeff Lemire crafts several short stories that explore the early, pre-dimensional exile lives of these heroes. On their own, these glimpses into the past are fun but not especially illuminating. Mainly they serve to showcase the wildly diverse art styles of the many guest artists assembled for this issue. Each segment looks good, but the standout comes with the combination of Mike Allred and colorist Dave Stewart in the final chapter. The real strength of this annual is in how the stories are linked together. The framing device gives a much-needed spotlight to the aged, scatterbrained Col. Weird and explores the dangers and unpredictability of time travel. The ending ensures that this issue is every bit as sadly sweet as the main series. -Jesse
